"Mom, I'm going to be late for school!" I yelled up the stairs of my small California home.

"One second, Reagan!" My mom yelled back down to me.

I groaned in annoyance. She always made me late. On any other normal school day I wouldn't mind that I wasn't going to be on time. I mean, it was school. But today was different. It was my first day as a sophomore at a new school. A new high school, to be exact. I had moved to Cali just recently from New York. I had loved it there. So had my mom. We had a really good life there. I had all my best friends in New York and my mom had her job. The one problem was my dad. It wasn't safe for us there anymore. So, last month, my mom and I made the hard decision to move thousands of miles away to a place my dad would never hurt us. Ever.

Flashback:

"Stop! Dad! Mom, get out!" I yelled desperately.

"Don't run away from me!" My dad ordered and I stopped in my tracks.

"Dad, please stop!" I cried.

"Shut up, Reagan!" He yelled back at me.

He proceeded to run over to my mom and pin her to the ground. He repeatedly hurt her and I sobbed helplessly. There was nothing I could do...

"Please, stop..." I whimpered and fell to the floor.

My father walked away from my mom, who was lying unconscious on the floor, and towards me. I screamed and stood up immediately. I ran to the closest room and locked the door.

"Come back here! Open the door!" My dad yelled as he pounded his fists on the wood separating us.

I stayed silent. I was so scared I was shaking. How could this happen? We were always a happy family. This wasn't the father I knew. He was a monster.

Present day:

"I'm ready!" My mom said after she finally ran down the staircase.

"Let's go! I'm already late!" I said and ran outside toward the car.

California was going to be different...I knew it.
