Lan Wangji could usually tell what Chao-Qīng was thinking. Not always to the exact, but it used to scare him how close he could be. Sometimes, and these are very few between, there was something that threw him off. It isn't always much, but enough to realize he should take a moment to think and reconsider. Today felt like one of those times. There was something in his tone. His words held a kind of anger, if that was even the right word to describe it. Disdain? No. Perhaps discomfort?
Usually, Lan Wangji would brush off such a tone, one accompanied with harsh words that were nothing new to him. This time it felt different, like he couldn't just ignore it. This was Chao-Qīng. Wasn't this normal? There was a chance he was putting too much thought into it, assuming the worst when nothing was wrong. Still, to not pick up on signs like this after being together for so long would be somewhat concerning. It was also true that Chao-Qīng wouldn't take well to a reasonable talk about his well being.
He pulled his tangzhuang closer, letting his breath travel in a light swirl against the dim moonlight. It was slow, but a mesmerizing action he stopped to admire for a moment. Even though it was darker than most times, he could just make out some shapes and outlines aside from what was right in front of him. He hadn't left the warmth to brood, or to even get away from Chao-Qīng's attitude. He simply wanted to see the sky, feel the cold before winter was over. If Chao-Qīng saw him out here it would be a mix of 'what are you doing?' and 'come inside, you'llcatch a cold' , but that didn't bother him.
He would have to turn back soon, either way. There was still something he hadn't done yet. Lan Wanji sighed slowly, closing his eyes to let the cold surround him. He was often questioned about his tolerance to certain weather. They were questions he wouldn't always care to answer, yet his reaction to them never failed to make Chao-Qīng laugh. That heartened smile was enough for him to be content enduring them, even if Chao-Qīng never understood why. But it was fine. Lan Wangji didn't have to explain anything, because he knew Chao-Qīng felt the same way.
His footsteps on the cold stone were the only sound against a quiet night, almost too loud to bear. All it meant was that his thoughts were the loudest of all, overtaking any peaceful moment he could feel out here. He was stuck until he was to go back, with the voice inside his head telling him there was something he missed. Could he really just be overthinking it? Was there a chance Chao-Qīng was just fine, completely unphased by the words that were spoken earlier between them?
"Maybe I should turn back," he whispered to himself, reaching out to feel the cold air in front of him.
He sighed again, eyes closed and focused on nothing but the sound of his heart and footsteps?
