I slowly came out of the haze of sleep, my eyes taking in the darkness of my bed chamber. I often awoke in the middle of night, a malady that plagued me since childhood. Normally, I shuffle in my sheets and return to sleep with little time lost.

This night, though, my room was not so dark as usual. My curiosity peaked, I forewent the routine and instead waited to rise from the murkiness of deep sleep, my eyes adjusting as time passed. When finally I felt removed from the trappings of slumber, I noticed a faint glow was causing the aberration in lighting. My gaze followed the glow, from soft, dull edge back towards its source.

Impossibly white teeth stretched into smile at the corner of my room, the intense glow of which made part of a withered, pallid face visible. Understandably startled, I cried out in terror.

And wider the smile grew.
