A Breakthrough

"No, no, hell no!" Valerie stamped her foot on the floor of her shelf/room, glaring at the three humans in front of her. "Bobby, this is my room!"

Bobby sighed heavily and sent a tired smile the Borrowers way. "Val, kid, it's just for tonight. I've only got one other room than this one. Technically, that there is your room, not the entire space. I wouldn't suggest this if I had another option."

Looking up at the older hunter, Valerie struggled to argue with him. He's been so good to her. Gave her so much. He was just asking this from her for one night, yet she couldn't just shut up and deal with it. "Can't you give up your own room and stay in here instead?" She frowned, turning her head away so she didn't have to meet his eyes anymore. 

Maybe a week had passed since she met the Winchesters, but they weren't there too often. They came and went, and never really stayed for much other than the information they needed. But tonight, it was late and it didn't make sense for Bobby to send them away to find a motel, she knew that. 

"Bobby's already made up his mind, deal with it." Dean scoffed. Had he or Sam ever argued with him, or their own father the way Valerie was trying they'd get a good smack on the back of the head. 

"Dean." Sam frowned at his older brother then looked to Valerie. "Hey, look, we don't like it any more than you do. I for sure don't want to invade your space. But it's just for tonight. We won't bother you. You can keep your curtain closed as much as you want."

She liked Sam more than Dean. Sam always tried to talk in a way that made sense to her. That didn't sound like he was trying to force her into something. He was the smarter of the two. The friendlier. He made himself far more welcoming than Dean. 

"Fine." Though she didn't sound too convinced, even saying it herself. "But Sam's the one that stays in here. That's my compromise."

"There is no compromise the decision was made, the hell-" Dean pursed his lips and shut his mouth as Sam kicked his ankle. He sent his brother a glare, then looked back to the Borrower. "What, you don't like me or something? You scared of me?"

Sam tried to get his brother to shut up. It was obvious how uncomfortable the interrogating tone made the Borrower. He watched Valerie from the corner of his eye, watched her look like she was struggling with herself. He felt bad for her. She was a strong-willed person. Brave, in her own way. And yet when it came to them, or any other human for that matter, she just couldn't speak her mind. Her body betrayed her nature. 

Rather than verbally answer Dean's question, Valerie stepped back into her room and pulled her curtain shut tight. She couldn't take their stares on her, not right now. It felt suffocating. She could feel her throat wanting to close up on her. She struggled to breathe, holding fistfuls of the fabric that separated her from the rest of the world. 

There were soft murmurs on the other side, then the shuffling of feet. One, two, three...four. Two people had left the room. She closed her blue eyes tightly and counted again. One, two, three, four. It didn't help much, but it did something at the very least. She wasn't about to run to Bobby and make herself look even more weak in front of those boys.

She gasped as her curtain was suddenly yanked back, ripped from her hands, and making her fall forward to her knees. The action caught her so off-guard. Her breath caught in her throat. The human above her cursed quietly and said something else, but her heart was hammering too loudly in her ears. What was this? This was new. It was like the whole world was closing in around her. It was like some force was trying to crush her very being.

Dean frowned at the sight before him. Bobby and Sam had told him to apologize, but he wasn't going to apologize to a curtain. Had he hurt her? No, her breathing was too irregular. "Val? Kid?" He tried to get her to respond, but she acted as if she didn't even hear him, doubled over on her hands and knees. "Shit. You gotta be kidding me."
