Chapter 19: A Step Forward

While I was simply taking in the scenery the small group of Loki familia adventurers were obviously on edge. They made sure to keep a 10-foot distance between us and silently stared at me ready to take action against me at any moment. Well, I couldn't exactly blame them, but the tension made it pretty hard to get comfortable. And so I tried to break the ice a bit.

"Hey, how have you been?" I say in a light tone.

"..." silence.

Cmon, say something. I complain internally.

Riveria and Gareth simply sharpened their eyes at me, while Bete sneered at my nonchalant attitude and Lefiya cowered slightly.

"Oi." Bete was the first to speak up, but his eyes held animosity. It would seem he wasn't looking for a calm conversation.

"Yes," I respond in a light tone regardless.

"What the hell did you do?" he asked."

? what does that mean? I frown at the question.

"Is this about Aiz?" I ask.

"No shit! Why the hell are you casually strolling around with her as if you're pals or some shit?! You're a monster and an enemy!" He yelled at me.

Geez, calm down. I think. It would seem Riveria had similar thoughts because she tried to talk him down but he simply disregarded her with a "shut it hag,"

"We just had a little talk. In any case, we aren't "pals" or anything like that. She's simply... giving me a chance to prove my innocence," I carefully choose my words.

Bete's eyebrows knit at my words "Innocence?" he repeats in confusion. "What innocence?! Not only are you a monster, but A god called you out for being evil! What more possibly is there?!" He yells at me in frustration.

"I could tell you, but I feel as though no answer would be sufficient for you no?" I say. He clicks his tongue in response.

And just like that, we were back to square one. I held in a sigh.

"...what happened that night?" asked Riveria.

"Huh?" I turn my head to her.

"The night when you disappeared... what happened?" she asked.

"Hmm. I'm sure you already heard it," I try saying, however...

"Yes but I want to hear your side," She told me. I was a little surprised. I felt myself begin to smile a bit.

What a pleasant surprise, I thought. First Aiz now Riveria. I guess I can reason with them a little. "Well, then I suggest you take a seat,"

They spread out Bete didn't move from where he was sitting only half-facing me.

Riveria and Gareth kept a good 8-foot distance from me while lefiya sat awkwardly near Riveria. Still rather tense but less so than before.

"I'll begin with when we split off," I begin to explain my side of the story. How Hermes lied about me having a plan. The fact that Aiz overheard Hestia confronting Hermes, the little bits and pieces of what I know happened on the surface and my discussion with Aiz. and as I did so I stayed cautiously optimistic about their reaction. For the most part, it didn't seem negative apart from Bete, who seemed to have no interest in what I had to say.

And when I finished:

"..." silence. Gareth and Riveria were taking a thinking stance while Bete just stared on disinterestedly, Meanwhile Lefiya looked between everyone else nervously and seemed to be developing her opinion on the matter.
