Chapter 16: "Moving the Goal Line"

Quantum Foam/Multiverse

"Quantum foam (also referred to as space-time foam) is a concept in quantum mechanics devised by John Wheeler in 1955. The foam is supposed to be conceptualized as the foundation of the fabric of the universe."

"The multiverse (or meta-universe) is the hypothetical set of infinite or finite possible universes (including the Universe we consistently experience) that together comprise everything that exists: the entirety of space, time, matter, and energy as well as the physical laws and constants that describe them. The various universes within the multiverse are sometimes called parallel universes or 'alternate universes'."

The first subject which science and mystic theory were brought together following the Cataclysm is the hypotheses of the Multiverse. Long the holy grail of physics on par with zero point energy (ZPE) production and faster than light (FTL) travel, it's rumored there was a major breakthrough in the realm of transdimensional physics which helped kick off or at least exacerbate the Cataclysm. Through the mystic disciplines dimensional travel has been achieved, but there are still organizations working on a technology based version.

"Where have you brought us?" Walter demanded.

Hasani walked silently ahead of him.

When it had looked like the Thorns were about to overrun them, the Needle warriors prepared for a fight to death in order to protect the noncombatants. Hasani's arrival bolstered them and allowed them to retrieve the body of Lord Marku from the battlefield. When the vanguard of the Thorn forces arrived she opened a portal that allowed the Black Needles to escape. Now, all of his people were sheltering in the cold outside of the ice fortress he was being lead through.

"I asked you a question?!" Walter roared grabbing her by the shoulder.

She moved faster than the eye could perceive. Seizing his wrist with one hand Hasani jerked, twisted, and threw Walter over her shoulder. The weight of his extensive cybernetic enhancements didn't phase her ability to toss him around. Walter landed flat on his back with an echoing thud. Reflexively her foot found a spot on the side of his neck.

"Never touch me again," Hasani hissed. "If you do I will-"

The click of motors and hum of a capacitor charging stopped her words.

Looking down Hasani found herself staring into the flat dark muzzle of a plasma tube. The barrel extended from the top of Walters right forearm. The man, beneath the weathered and seasoned exterior of a lifelong warrior, appeared to be enjoying himself.

"You'll do what?" Walter asked softly. "Do you believe you will break me like some boy in his first real fight?"

Hasani said nothing and didn't move.
