~Chapter Thirteen~

As cliche as it was, it felt like fireworks were going off. Although it did take Steve a few seconds to realise what was going on, his eyes going wide when Y/N's lips connected with his. But when he realised what she was doing his hands immediately tightened on her waist, drawing her in as close as he could get her. But alas their moment was cut short when someone cleared their throat.
"Well this is cute and all but you guys do realise there is a system of tunnels down there crawling with those demo-dogs?" Dustin asked as the rest tried looking everywhere else but the pair that, only a few seconds ago, had their lips locked.
Y/N pulled away from Steve, finally realising that, shit did she just kiss her best friend? Well she's probably screwed now. Steve just stood there however, an expression on his face that looked like he had been having too much fun. Until he finally looked at Y/N and realised what had happened and, holy shit a smoking hot girl who also has the best personality just kissed him.
"Yeah you're right we need to get out of here." Y/N said before taking one last glimpse at Steve.
"Let's get out of here guys." Her eyes kept wondering back to Steve as they all walked back to the car. They'd really have to talk about what just happened, but Y/N was just scared it would backfire in her face.

The car ride was silent, the radio didn't work so the sound of silence, along with a few faint breaths filled the small space of the vehicle. Y\N, however, tried to keep her breathing as quite as she could, trying to save herself from freaking out.
"So how about the whether." Dustin asked as he looked out the window to take in the view of...a black night sky.
"Dustin, you should've just not said anything." Max sighed, taking a short glance between Y/N and Steve, who sat quietly in the back of the car staring at Y/N.
"God it's like a giant staring contest is going on in here." Dustin half yelled.
"I get we almost just died and that was super scary but honestly you both", he pointed to Y/N and Steve, "kissed, big deal, it's been a long time coming. But once again we almost just died while discovering something big. So obviously we have bigger things to worry about right now. No offence love you guys heaps." Shocked was one word to describe the look that appeared on everyone's faces, and that outburst from Dustin along with the confirmation that they did in fact kiss caused Y/N to slump in her seat a little more, hoping it would devour her and take her out of this mess. But that would not happen, and instead she was stuck in this god awful car ride for another 20 minutes.

Finally they had stopped at The Byers house. Y/N raced out of the car as fast as she could, the rest following.
"This is all so confusing. Why are there tunnels growing under a pumpkin field?" Max asls to no one in particular. For a moment everyone is silent until Will starts speaking. "Mike was right. They're like veins, which means they have to lead somewhere." Steve was next to speak up. "But where are they leading to?"
"The Science Lab. It's the only explanation. It's where the first portal was opened last year." Y/N stated, sitting down on the Byers couch.
"But didn't they close it last year?" Mike added looking around at everyone.
"Maybe they thought they did. Maybe something just cracked after it was closed and whatever this thing is has always had one foot into our world." Y/N whispered. No one else seemed to want to speak after that revelation was put out there. It seemed to be sinking in that all their lives are about to get a lot harder.
"So we need to go to the Lab and close it for good." Dustin stands up pulling out a map of Hawkins. Pointing at the map, he gesture to where to Science facility is. "Here, we get their and maybe we burn the gate." Max is next to speak, "Yeah but we tried that with the tunnels and look where that got us, almost eaten alive."
"El. That's how we do it. She's got powers, which is obviously related to all of this. Maybe she can close it." Dustin explains packing the map back up.
"Well I think we should ask her first, what if it hurts her?" Mike suggests, seeming a little uncomfortable at the thought of El putting herself on the line.
"Ok, we go to El's, explain everything and see what she says. If she says no then we'll figure something else out. If she says yes, then we go to the lab and shut this shit down." Y/N finishes before she stands from the couch. "Now all of you go get cleaned up and take a break. I'll yell out when we're ready to head off." When she finishes speaking, the group disperses through the house.

Y/N moves to the kitchen, filling a glass of water, but freezes when she hears the one voice she's grown to know so well.
"Y/N, can we talk for a second?" Steve sounds shy, fiddling with his hands, taking small glimpses at her.
"Yeah, I mean, I think we should talk."
"About that kiss-"
"I'm sorry, I don't know what came over me, I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable." She's rambling now.
"Wait what? Uncomfortable? God no, Y/N, you could never make me uncomfortable."
"So you didn't hate it?"
"Absolutely not. I'm going to admit this to you and only you, so please don't tell Dustin otherwise I'll never hear the end of it, but I like you, like a lot. I have since the second I laid eyes on you."
Y/N just stood there, mouth gaping. It took a few seconds for the words to process in her mind before she spoke again.
"But you and Nancy, and then, you stopped talking to me. Now I'm confused."
Steve let out a long sigh. "I know, I've been a massive dick to you. You were my friend and I treated you like we hadn't known each other for years. I tried with Nancy because I was scared that if I told you how I felt then I'd lose my best friend. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry if I made you feel any less important to me than what you really are. I care about you a lot." Y/N didn't know what to say. All this time she thought how she felt towards this boy were never requited and yet here he was, in the Byers kitchen, pouring his feelings out like they'd been locked up for so long. Y/N looked up at Steve and she could see the worry growing in his eyes so instead of going on a whole tangent on how she had cared for him a lot more then just a friend would, she strode around the bench, grabbed him by the jacket and pulled his lips to meet hers in a kiss that said all her feelings for her.
Steve, lagging on the fact that she was kissing him finally reached up to her face and pulled her in deeper. Until Y/N registered that he was still hurt and pulled away quickly, slightly panting for air.
"Your hurt oh my god, I'm so sorry." Both their cheeks were flushed. But Steve just smirked and grabbed her hips, pulling her in a little closer. "Well maybe you could kiss it better." Y/N let out a soft laugh before they met in another kiss, this one a little slower then the previous. Until they were interrupted by someone clearing their throat. Dustin, Max, Mike, Will and Lucas all stood, slightly disgusted looks plastered on all their faces.
"So this is what you wanted to do instead of leaving." Dustin smirked causing both Steve and Y/N to pull away from each other, but connecting their hands between them.
"Ugg come on, in the car now." Y/N gestures to the door, watching all the kids snicker as they filed through the front door, she took one last look towards Steve, giving him a small smile in which he returned with a smug grin before she shook her head and pulled him out the door with her.
