"Oh, suck my d –"
"Willy? Pecker? Weenie?"
I glared at Colby, momentarily taking my eye from the scope. He stood beside me, leaning over the railing of the porch and squinting to see the unharmed target several yards away.
"Dick," I huffed, tearing my fingers through my hair. "I've lost it. I am a failure. An embarrassment, really."
Colby made a face. "Dramatic, much?"
"C, it's gonna be life or death."
His eyes were glued to the distant target and he swayed back and forth on the balls of his feet, clutching the railing for support. "You think too much."
"You don't think enou –"
"Vitt, you're letting your mind get in the way." He glanced at me and shrugged. "If you doubt your abilities, it's gonna show. You've never had problems before, I've seen you aim with your eye swollen shut, why's this different?"
I gritted my teeth. "Stakes."
"Stakes?"
"Yes, stakes," I snapped, "Any other target, I could easily get another chance if I missed, but Fiorino? His security will be on my ass in minutes and within that time, Carlissa could be toast."
"Pft," Colby snorted, "His security would drop like dominoes."
I craned my neck and looked through the scope and groaned at my misty eyesight. Clenching my jaw, I turned my face and attempted my right eye. While everything looked as it should, I knew that the moment I pulled that trigger, it'd be with the precision of a Jedi.
"I need to become a righty," I murmured, "My left eye's useless."
"Stop looking at it that way," Colby whined. "It's instinct, Vitt, I know you can do it. You've never needed a perfectly clear shot to excel."
"I can't afford to –" My voice broke pathetically. "I care about her."
Colby slapped his hand onto my shoulder, giving it a gentle squeeze. "Gee, I never knew that." He rolled his eyes. "That's why you won't miss."
I bowed my head, letting my hair fall over my forehead.
I'm not so sure.
"Alright," Colby took a step closer and smacked the back of my head. "Focus. Envision it."
I raised a brow, giving him a doubtful look.
"Do it!" Colby's disapproving look bore into my temple. "Envision Livio-fucking-Fiorino, mere feet away from Ca – your girl."
"She's not my –"
"Shut up, Piero."
Grumbling under my breath, I returned my cloudy vision to the scope and watched the blurred silhouette of a man.
"You may be nervous, but Carly's gonna be terrified."
My jaw relaxed and I pulled the trigger; the bullet tore through the target's head, ripping it back onto the ground.
