ever since he'd been sucked into this mess, he'd wanted happiness for everyone that was to join him on the whole 'saving the world thing'. even if that meant he didn't always get something that would make him happy. he was thrilled for everyone he knew, all those kids and everyone else. he was glad they were happy. and he would sit back. pretend that everything was okay if it would keep them happy. his happiness came in the form of seeing his friends happy. and if they were happy with their respective partners ( nancy and jonathan. mike and el. lucas and max. maybe even robin and vickie if she would just ask ), he'd be more than happy to distance himself. allow them to be happy and be happy for them on the slide lines. unpacking everything that came with saving hawkins was too much. he'd much rather pretend. because he's gotten good at that. pretending to be king steve, a good role model on those kids, a leader to the group. he pretends.
