Jamie shakily exited his SUV, starting to walk towards Rip. His chest was tight with guilt and his heart thudded with anxiety.
He had just committed what some people might consider the worst sin of all. Murder.
"What happened?" Rip asked, knowing that Jamie would only approach him if there was something serious that needed to be taken care of quickly.
Jamie froze in his tracks as Rip started towards him, a knot swelling up in his throat.
"Jamie, what happened?" Rip emphasized. The lawyer found that he no longer had the strength to verbally admit what he had done and led Rip to his car.
He opened the trunk, revealing the pale and freshly deceased corpse of Sarah Nguyen, a reporter that had previously posed a threat to John's livelihood.
"I-I don't know what happened, it just... it all went wrong." Jamie choked, trying not to cry again.
Rip shut the trunk and huffed through his nose. "Let me talk to your father." He told the Dutton, beginning to walk away.
"Rip, no-" Jamie grabbed his shoulder, almost immediately regretting doing so as Rip spun on his heel and pinned him up against the car.
"I don't work for you." He hissed quickly. "I don't work for you, Jamie."
"If you tell him, then-then he's an accessory to murder. Right now the only accountable person is me, a-and we need to keep it that way." Jamie explained.
"Listen Jamie, I'm just a wrangler now. Kayce's got my job." The ranch hand began to walk away before the lawyer called out to him again.
"Please Rip... as a friend. I've always treated you like an equal. L-Like a friend."
Rip turned back, nodding a little. "Yeah... you have."
"It-It didn't even feel like my hands... It was like I was out my body watching it happen. I-I don't know what to do." Jamie forced the words out of his mouth, trying his hardest not to break down in front of Rip.
Rip gently patted his shoulder. "Ok, listen, stay here. Don't move." Jamie obeyed.
The wrangler stalked off to the bunkhouse, knowing that there would only be one particular inhabitant present.
"Working hard as usual." He murmured, seeing Walker posted up.
"Hell gimme somethin' to do, Rip. I'll do it." The other male replied, not looking up from what he was messing with.
"Yeah, I got something for you." Rip smirked.
"I meant ranch work." Walker specified, cocking an eyebrow.
"All I need you to do is drive a car, Walker. Can you drive a car for me?" He asked.
"Yeah, I can drive a fuckin' car for ya, Rip." The wrangler huffed, standing up.
"Thank you." Rip's smirk never wavered as Walker followed him out of the bunkhouse.
Rip loaded up in Jamie's SUV, taking the driver's seat while Walker followed behind them in a Yellowstone Ranch truck.
On the way to the location, Rip and Jamie spoke a bit. "Jamie, sometimes the only way to get rid of a mess is to get rid of you." The lawyer gulped.
"Don't put me in that position."
The vehicles halted when they came upon Sarah's rental car that was parked on the side of the road.
All the males got out, tension filling the air.
"Go jump in that car and follow me." Rip told Walker, motioning to the rental car behind them.
Jamie switched to the driver's side of his own car while Rip took the ranch truck. Though reluctant, Walker obeyed the order he had been given.
