Time (c. 1966)

(by A. V. Deitch c. 1966)

1.
Time is an octopus
Isolated in today
In its own depth
Of inky darkness,
Swirling through
Layers of yesterday,
Sensitized in slow motion
Suction eyes without
A contact lens
To phase the surface
Of tomorrow.

2.
Time is a slotted gate
Of weatherbeaten boards
Swinging on rusty hinges
Through a crooked arc.

3.
Time is a tug of war
Across unhallowed ground
Barefaced and tenderfooted
Reveries, against stamped masks
And heavy booted stiff routines.
