"Deputy Carvelli and I are 10 minutes from the scene. Do not fire unless I give orders."
"Yes sir."
It's 10 at night and Adriana and are headed to scene.
There are about 20 officers surrounding a man, with guns out. I'm waiting for information, but I have instructed that no fires their gun as the suspect has no weapons on them.
"Family is on scene. His name is Phillip Jones. 55, black male. His wife, Belinda, has told us that her husband is suicidal. This episode may be triggered because it is their late son's birthday. Their son died due to suicide two years ago and it has affected her husband very badly," An officer says over the radio
"And you said he had a gun? Where's the gun, now?" Adriana asks
"On the ground. About a meter out," the officer answers
"Any signs of any other weapons?" I question
"No."
"Is he moving? Showing signs of distress?" I ask
"Yes. He looks to be in his head. Muttering words we can't hear. But his hands are in the air."
"Put your guns down. It might be freaking him out or he'll encourage you to shoot him. Do not make any moves," I order
"Yes sir." I get off the highway and speed onto the main road before turning into a neighbourhood.
Deeper into the neighbourhood the street becomes blocked off by other police cars.
I park right outside the barricade before we get out.
"Please head back inside. Everything is under control," I tell neighbours who are outside their houses as we walk. Obviously they don't listen and I roll my eyes.
When we get to the barricade of cars that are surrounding Mr. Jones, I notice all the officers have their guns down like told.
"Mrs. Jones. I promise you, we'll get your husband in custody safely," I tell the middle aged woman who seems to be highly shake up. She nods before one of other officers escort her away.
"Mr. Jones! Can you turn and look at me please!" I yell. The middle aged man turns around and faces me. His head down and hands in the air.
"I want you to listen to me carefully. I want you to get on your knees and place your hands behind your head." I make a very risky choice as he is now facing the direction of the gun he had in his hand prior.
"Adriana can you put my hand on my taser, please," I ask
I feel my wife's hand on mine, moving it to my taser. I never really have to use my gun or taser and in a time like this, I don't want to mistaken them.
I take out my taser and hold it up as he starts to move. "No! Keep your hands up, please!" I ask as he begins to lower his arms. He stops moving and stands up straight, holding his hands up.
I notice his head move down, down in the direction of the gun.
"Mr. Jones, keep your eyes on me, please!" I request so that he doesn't relapse in any kind of way and harm himself. "Keep your guns down!" I order my officers as I see some raise their firearms, in my peripheral.
"Now, put your hands on your head, please!" I try a different way of getting him onto his knees.
He puts his hands behind his head, while looking up, passed me.
"Now! Get on your knees!" I order, my taser pointing at him.
He keeps his hands behind his back as he bends one knee, but when he gets on one knee he loses balance.
