~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I yawned as I walked around the house with my youngest cousin Mǐqí. It is around 8 am, We walked around the house counting the doors and stairs. Mǐqí tugged on my sleeve once we stopped in front of the front door. I looked down at him.
"Sissy? Why do we count the Doors and stairs? It seems a little silly," He asked. I smiled softly, I knew he was too young to understand why we do this.
"Because it's the rules, When you are older I'll tell you the true reason why we do this," I said with a smile. He pouted a bit.
"But Sissy, I'm 9 years old!" He tried to reason. I chuckled a bit and patted his head with a soft smile. he huffed a bit as my Mother, his Aunt, walked over to us.
"Yuri, Mǐqí, Breakfast is ready. And Yuri, Mother wishes to speak with you, Yàdāng, and Yuēhàn After breakfast," She said. I bowed my head a bit.
"Yes Mother," I replied as I looked down at Mǐqí with a smile. "Come on Mǐqí, let's get breakfast" He darted for the dining room and I walked after him with a laugh. Once in the dining room, I sat at the table and looked around. the table was an oval shape, at the head of the table was my grandmother, head of clan and house, Yǔ Lum, Followed by Tàiyáng, My mother, Xīngxīng, My Aunt, Steve, Xingxing'x husband, then Shīzi, My uncle. Then came my cousin, Yuēhàn, Dí lán, and Mǐqí. Finally, rounding off the family back around to My grandmother would be, Yàdāng, My eldest brother, Qiūtiān, My younger brother, then me.
Grandmother and Mother served breakfast and all of us began eating. After breakfast, Yàdāng, Yuēhàn, and I followed Grandmother to the Living room while the younger of the family was led outside to play. We sat on the couch as Grandmother sat in her chair with a sigh.
"As the three of you know, I am getting old and will not be able to lead the clan or house for much longer. So I have decided to pick the next clan leader." She noticed Yuēhàn's confusion and nodded.
"Why tell us then? Wouldn't our mothers be better suited for this role?" He asked. Yàdāng and I nodded in agreement as Grandmother chuckled a bit.
"I understand your confusion but I have decided to look at your generation more than my own children. As I have seen potential in you three. However, while I have my decision and your mothers have already chosen I would like to know who, among you three, do you think would lead the clan the best." She said calmly. I decided to speak first.
"Well, Both Yàdāng and Yuēhàn have the potential to lead the clan. However, I think Yuēhàn would be best as Yàdāng has issues telling people no." I said before Yàdāng spoke.
"I think Yuri would be best, She's more level-headed than the two of us are and she easily talks to Mǐqí. She's also a great leadership figure." He mused. Yuēhàn Nodded in agreement.
"I can see her being the clan head. She's modest but helps everyone. She's confident in her decisions but will ask others for input before going through with some of them." He conceded. I blushed a bit but shook my head. I was about to speak when Grandmother raised her hand. It was the universal sign to be quiet as she spoke.
"your parents and I came to the same conclusion. It's nice seeing how humble she can be but at the same time be strong but level-headed in situations." She said calmly. I bowed my head in thanks for her kind words before lifting my head.
"Yuri, I expect to see you tonight after the younger ones go to bed. Tonight you will become my heir and future clan head."
"Yes grandmother, I am honored by your decision," the others and I knew this was our cue to leave and got up. the boys jogged outside as I headed to my room to grab my book. When I heard something rather worrying.
"Mother...are you sure she has to go through the ritual now?"
"I'm positive Tàiyáng."
I continued up the stairs as if I didn't hear them but MY heart sank hearing this. 'A ritual? this...is rather worrying. and at a time so late?' I sigh and shook my head. 'No use dwelling on it. I will find out soon enough.'
