Ch. 1 "The journey begins."
"You know, you don't have to do it if you don't want to." Said Mr. Finch as I prepared myself for the great journey. Even if he said I didn't have to I knew I had to do it in order to save my country. Allow me to explain you carefully why should my country be saved.
I was born 15 years ago, in Dallas, Texas. My mom used to tell me that only 20 years before I was born, Texas was part of a big country, named United States. Unfortunately, the president of the United States didn't exactly agree with the governor of Texas, so Texas seceded from United States. Now, we were a country.
Our country worked well for like 20 years, but, unfortunately, in 2025 a very huge crisis hit us. Our country was helpless, we had no money for anything. That's when King Atticus came. He came from a country (no one knows exactly which country he comes from) to our country to "help us." He said he just wanted to help us, and that we would be okay, but he was lying. He took advantage of us, and he conquered our country. We must obey king Atticus, we got no other choice.
My parents died when I was only 9 years old. Mr. Finch took care of me and my siblings very well. He moved in with us when my parents died. He was the typical 60 year old inventor. He created what he called the "Rewind Machine." He told me that we could go together to a big journey, where we would go back in time and try to warn the governor of Texas that if he separated from USA, we would face serious consequences later. Unfortunately, Mr. Finch told me he would not be able to go with me.
"Of course I'll do it," I said, "but who will take care of my siblings?"
"Do not worry, I will. Don't forget what I told you to do."
"Thank you. Would you please tell Darcy and James I'll be back soon?" I said. Darcy and James were my little brother and sister.
"Of course I will. Now, go in there before I start crying." Mr. Finch said. "Oh, and give this to Thomas just in case he doesn't believe you." He handed me a little note. I put it in my pocket and smiled.
"Bye, Mr. Finch." I said getting inside the machine, and getting ready to go to the date that changed our lives forever. May 14, 2015.
May 14, 2015
I woke up kind of confused. The last thing I could remember was to get into the machine. I was still inside the machine, so I got out and started exploring. Dallas was different. People were walking in the streets like if they didn't care. They didn't seem to be scared of the Atticers. Atticers were like officers, but they worked for Atticus.
I saw giant buildings, they were really big. King Atticus forced us to demolish all of our buildings just because he thought they were useless.
"Excuse me, sir." I said to an old man that was walking.
"Yes?" he asked politely.
"What year is it?" I asked. The old man just stared at me confused.
"2015." He answered, and then he left without a word. Maybe he thought I was crazy, but I didn't care. I just smiled and started jumping in excitement. Everyone passing by stared at me as if I was insane, but I couldn't have cared less.
"Are you okay?" A guy of about 16 or 17 asked as he saw me.
"Never been better." I said simply.
"What exactly are you wearing?" The guy asked. I turned to see my clothes. I was wearing the same as everyone else in my country, yellow coveralls and a white shirt. It looked terrible, but I didn't care.
"Coveralls, why?" I answered.
"Just wondering." He said, giving one last look to my clothes and turning to see my face. "So... you come here often?"
"No." I answered. I wasn't lying, obviously.
"What's your name?" he asked smiling.
"Grace, Grace Higgins." I answered.
"Well, my name is Jackson, Jackson Ewell."
"Yeah. I got to go, bye!" I exclaimed.
"Wait!" He exclaimed, but I ignored him and continued walking. He eventually got lost in the crowd.
I continued walking until I went to where Mr. Finch told to go. It was a huge house. He told me to knock on that door and ask for Thomas Finch. He told me to explain him everything that was going on and that he would understand. I stared at the house, wondering if it would be a good idea to do it. Mr. Finch never told me who Thomas was, but I guess he was his brother.
I finally got the courage and walked to the house's door. I knocked on the door three times, and then it opened, revealing a man of about 25 years.
"Yes, how can I help you?" The man asked.
"Well, I was looking for... Thomas... Thomas Finch."
"Well, that's me." The man really looked like Mr. Finch. He had blue yes and short, curly hair. His brother sure was handsome.
"I need to talk to you, but not here."
"Come on in." He said. I entered his house. It looked familiar, really familiar. I sat down on a couch and Thomas sat by my side.
"Well, maybe you won't believe me, but... your brother sent me here and-"
"Wait, I don't have a brother." He said confused. I stared one more time at his blue eyes and remembered why the house seemed so familiar. He was Mr. Finch! The truth is Mr. Finch never told us his name, and we didn't really care. He just told us to call him Mr. Finch and we obeyed.
"Mr. Finch?" I asked.
"I beg your pardon?"
"Oh, sorry. Let me explain you carefully. I come from the future. My name is Grace Higgins. In the future, a king named Atticus will conquer the whole country and-"
"Wait, are you saying USA is going to be conquered by a king?"
"Oh, yeah. I forgot to say that Texas is going to separate from United States." I said.
"What? That is nonsense. I mean, Texas can separate from USA, but why would we do that?"
"Well, he said it is all fault of someone he, well you, trusted."
"Okay, please listen. He says Texas and USA were getting along pretty well, but then someone came and told the governor that Texas would be better if it were a country of his own. He said the guilty one is... which was his name? Oh yeah! Nathan Gates."
"So, you are telling me my best friend, Nathan, will be the cause that Texas and USA separate."
"Yup, and then we'll face a crisis and King Atticus will come and he will destroy our country and force us to wear these ugly outfits." I said pointing at my clothes.
"What can I do about it? I'm not even sure if you're lying."
"He told me to give you this note." I said handing him a little note that Mr. Finch told me to give him in case he didn't believe me. He took the paper, read it, and then put it in his pocket.
"Don't you got any other proof?" He asked. I took out the watch.
"Does this seem familiar to you?" I asked. He nodded and I saw a tear running down his cheek.
"I'll help you."
A/N: I know it is short, but I just wanted to show you the first chapter so that you could comment if I should or not continue with the story. Thank you.
