I woke up, squinting at the blaring light. Where's mum and daddy? Is mum still sick? How long have I been out?
"Good morning, Mary," a woman smiled, I guessing a nurse, scribbled down my vitals from a machine.
"Where's my mummy and daddy? How long have I been out?" I blurted, panic started to form.
Her smile faded, as if I had disappointed her. This can't be good.
"You've been out for two weeks. You were at stage one of Chanson Disease, however you somehow survived. I'm going to go get a doctor to answer your questions, sweetheart," she said, walking out. A moment or two later, a doctor walked in.
"Hello, Mary. I'm doctor Mullins. Somehow you miraculously survived stage one of Chanson Disease. I am disappointed to inform you that you're mother passed away two days ago, and your father passed away three days ago from it," he said quietly. No, no, no, no, no! Tears streamed down my face, I laid sobbing. This can't be real.
"Mary, I will give you half an hour alone, a nurse will check on you later. Stay strong, it'll be okay," he whispered, awkwardly patting my back and left. I felt numb, does Morgan know about this? The rest of the day I silently cried, staying mute despite being asked questions. For the next week, all they did was run tests and leave me alone. I refused to eat, talk, or get out of bed. I was very numb, and very depressed. After three days, I finally spoke.
"Can I see my sister, Morgan?" I asked, and the nurse looked happy I spoke.
"Morgan's here, but we wanted to wait until you were... stable. I'll go get her," she smiled, walking out. Morgan walked in a minute later, looking exhausted, depressed, and frazzled. Like me. But I was paler, weak, and had lost ten pounds after fasting for three days.
"Sissy," I whispered, and she hugged me tightly.
"I missed you so much," she cried, "I thought I would lose you after mum and dad too."
"I-I scared. If you can a-adopt me, I-I'll be a-an o-orphan," I stuttered.
"If they let me, I will adopt you. I promise," she said, more tears filling in her dark brown eyes. For the next few days, I learned she has a boyfriend, and was planning to tell mum and daddy this weekend and come for a surprise visit. She also has her own apartment, and her boyfriend lives with her, Tad, the and her dog, Casey, a chocolate lab. Apparently, her boyfriend is traveling here to support us with his parents. Apparently, mum was wrong, you could get in and out, but you have to have a card that said you've been tested and approved. I'm meeting him and his family tomorrow, and I'm nervous.
