Lauren Jacobson stood in front of the tan brick building staring at the glass door with the FBI emblem plastered bright. Every move she made showed her hesitance to the change, she had never considered the behavioral analysis unit to be a career option for her. She assumed that she would have a job in marketing or accounting like her parents, but she also had never assumed what happened to her would ever happen to her.
Taking a deep breath she approached the door, the clicks of her heels across the shining marble floor made a few people glance her way. She pressed the arrow pointing up to reach the floor where her potential new boss' office was, as she waited for the stainless steel doors to open her brown eyes wondered taking in every detail.
This single interview could change her entire life completely.
The doors to the elevator opened inviting her to step in, the bored faces of a handful of middle-aged men added to the gray walls of the box made her consider the stairs. Despite wanting to run away from the group she lifted her chin and stepped inside. The air around her was thick, the familiar claustrophobic feeling crept up her neck like a chill from the cold.
Lauren stepped from the elevator as soon as the doors opened, waiting for her by the another set of clear doors was her childhood best friend Derek Morgan. A smile graced her clear painted lips as he met her half way, his strong arms wrapped around her lifting her from the ground.
Lauren laughed lightly, "I can't thank you enough for this." Derek gave the young girl a smile and nodded it off as if it were nothing.
"It's no big deal, just trying to make sure my baby sister is taken care of." Lauren smiled at the phrase 'baby sister'. Derek was almost four years older than her, he had always taken care of her. Though she was from the north side of Chicago and him from the south they still took care of each other. When Lauren had to move to Vermont with her parents it destroyed her. Derek only recently found her again determined to make up for not being there for her.
"You always do," Lauren said as they walked through a set of desks all having people at them.
"Now, Hotch's office is just through that door," Derek's words were cut short.
"You mean the one labeled SSA A.Hotchner?" Lauren's voice was laced with teasing amusement.
"Shush," he shoved her lightly in a playful way, "Now just go, knock, and win yourself a job." Lauren took a deep breath and nodded. Each step made her feet feel like they were concrete block meant to hold her in place, looking back at Derek he gave her an encouraging nod as she climbed each step.
Her fist raised giving three knocks, "Enter."
