You were only fourteen.
It wasn't your fault. It really wasn't.
Your parents shouldn't have left you home alone. It was their fault for leaving you for the entire night.
And of course you had to be watching that scary movie your mother rented for you when strange noises started to occur.
The second you heard something strange from your backyard you immediately turned off the television and grabbed the nearby baseball bat from beside your fireplace that your friend had left behind a few days back.
You look over in the direction of your back door where you heard the noise, but now the only thing you hear is your heart beating out of your chest. You get up slowly and tip toe over nervously. Shakily, you make your way to the back door without turning on the light. And as you reach for it, you realize it hadn't been locked this entire time.
As fast as you picked up that bat you lock the door. You then hesitate but call out into the black of night from the safe side of the door.
"Who's there?!" you whisper more than anything else. And even though you actually expected some kind of response, nothing but the wind howls back.
You try to calm yourslelf down, foolishly thinking that just because you didn't get an answer and don't hear any more sounds, that you're still safe for now. However, you soon come to realize that you're not entirely safe...
You quickly rush around your house, turning off all the lights until you're left completely in the dark. You then sit on your stairs with the bat in your hands and stay completely still. That is, until your phone begins to buzz out of absolutely nowhere. You look over to its spot back in your living room and find that it's practically lighting up the whole room! You contemplate for a moment whether or not to get it, but are way too scared to move your body and instead continue to wait by the stairs for the faceless intruder to break in.
Your leg bounces as you wait in silence. There's still no sound from outside, but that doesn't mean that you're no longer concerned. In fact, it makes you even more nervous. What if the intruder's already inside? What if they're waiting for you to get up from your spot on the stairs to fucking whack you over the head with their own bat?
Just then, the garage door begins to crank opened. You can hear footsteps walk on just the other side of the wall nearby to where you're sitting, leading towards the side door of your house.
You quickly stand up and tighten the grip on your bat before throwing it over your shoulder and tiptoeing over to the door that leads to the garage. You suck in a breath and wait, hoping that the surface lock will be enough to keep the intruder out.
However, it's only a matter of seconds later when the door bursts open. You don't wait a moment longer to smack the person upside the head with the wooden bat and they fall to the ground with a thud.
You relax once you realize you're safe. Thank god. Today wasn't going to be the day you die.
But as you take a closer look upon the person you just knocked out, you realize it was your neighbor. Immediately, you drop the bat and bend down to shake them awake. However, they are not waking up. Intead, a pool of blood begins to rush from their head.
You fall backwards onto your hands and back away in disbelief. Then, you rush to the living room for your phone. There, you see that your mother called you several times and left a few messages, including one that explictly said that the neighbor was coming over to check on you.
You ignore the messages for now and instead call your mother back. The second she answers, you word vomit everything that just happened.
"Murderer!" she shouts back in absolute shock. "You fucking killed them! You- You knew they were coming and did it anyway! Oh my God!"
"No, no," you cry back to her, trying to ease both her mind and yours. "It was an accident! I had no idea they were coming over! You've got to believe me!"
"I'm calling them police," she finally states in a muffled voice, as though she's covering her mouth from puking.
It's then that you decide to hang up. Talking to your mother is going to do nothing for you now. Instead, you call your best friend and explain to her what happened. Luckily, she's a lot more understanding and agrees to help you out.
"Your friends will come looking for you at my house if you come here... We can meet at my summer cabin! You know where it is, right?"
"Y-yeah," you reply nervously.
"Okay. I'll meet you there. Only take the things you absolutely need and I'll see you soon. Love you."
"'K," you sob. "Love you, too."
You pull together a small suitcase of essentials and rush out of the house. At the summer cabin you arrive about two and a half hours later, arriving before your friend. You wait what feels like all night, but she never shows. Instead, you smash the front door's window and unlock it to allow yourself in. Your best friend shouldn't mind anyway.
Just as you're crying yourself to sleep on the sofa with your puke bucket just below, you get a phone call from your friend.
"Your mom was just here with the cops. They asked a lot of shit, but they finally left. I'll be there soon. Hang in, Y/N! Don't go anywhere! We'll figure this out together."
Thank god for her, you don't know where you'd be without her. You never talked to either of your parents from that day on. They're probably still looking for you to this day, still out to get you, but you're too scared to go and find out. Besides, you're already wanted by the cops, you don't want your idiotic mother to make it even worse.
