We're The Ducks

I wish I could say I'm excited to start at Eden Hall. Well I was, sort of, but that was before Fulton called me to say Portman's staying in Chicago. I met him in the alley with Charlie and Goldberg. Fult and I let off some steam whilst we waited. I did accidentally hit Goldberg with a slapshot though.

The last person we picked up was Adam. Cake-eater came out in a tie - obviously we made jokes. As we skate down a long road, I speak up.

"Remind me again, why aren't the others joining us?"

"They're sharing a cab from the hotel." Charlie tells me since they flew in and stayed at the same place - paid for by the school.

"I know that. I meant why are we going on stage and they're not?"

"No idea."

After shrugging it off, we continue our prior conversations - with random quacking on occasion. Talking to Connie and Adam, I don't really pay attention to what's happening around me - except that we're about to take a spiralling downhill turn. That is until I hear Goldberg scream:

"I'm a goalie, not a skater!"

Our heads snap around as we begin the downhill spiral. Goldie's heading straight for a staircase - Charlie breaks from the group to chase him down. We quickly divert our attention back to the road in front of us.

"We lost him." Guy jokingly accepts the idea that we'll never see him again.

"At least we have Julie." Connie plays along.

"Where's Dwayne when you need him?" Averman gets some laughs from us all.

"Like Fulton learning to skate all over again." I cackle as he glares at me.

Instead of going back to separate conversations, we just discuss how we're feeling about Eden Hall. A lot of nerves and excitement - what else would there be? Skating on a large straight stretch, we can take it easy knowing there's no quick turns or anything.

"You guys hear that?" Guy turns to us as screams and yells can be heard in the distance.

"Holy shit!" I shout as I look up to find Charlie and Goldberg flying off the bridge beside us.

"Yeah! Goldberg!" Averman cheers as they land in front of us and continue skating.

"Woah." Connie is taken aback.

"Goldberg, don't you ever do that to me again." Charlie tells him, slightly shaken up.

"Way to stick the landing." I applaud. "Close your mouth, Fulton. You'll swallow a fly. You too, Banks." I laugh as I turn to see their jaws on the floor in shock.

When we finally get to the gates of the school, we realise how short on time we are. Skating down the path, a couple of horses approach us. Jolting out of the way, we manage to skate past unharmed.

"What are we gonna do?" Fulton asks as we reach the building.

"Sneak in the back." Charlie answers as he opens a side door.

One by one, we filter into the room. Luckily, a red velvet curtain hides us. Just as we think we've gotten away with it, everything comes crashing down. My legs come out from under me, causing me to fall into the pile as the curtain covers us. Quickly removing it, I realise Guy broke my fall. He looks pissed.

"Sorry, someone tripped me." I quietly apologise before looking into the crowd.

"Hi." Charlie awkwardly introduces us. "We're the Ducks."

Scanning the audience, I find the rest of the Ducks. Luis looks like an embarrassed mother. At least the others are laughing. Awkwardly, I give them a small smile and slight wave. In return, Ken does the same as Russ gives me a thumbs up, still laughing.

After being ushered away, we take off our skating gear before a meeting. Back in our normal shoes, we get escorted to a different room. Before we enter, the man instructs us.

"Wait in here, the Dean will meet you shortly."

Upon entering the room, we are reunited with the rest of the team. It's been a while since I've seen them, but I always call when I can. With newfound excitement, we rush over to greet our friends. I hug each of them, starting with Kenny - my boy has grown and so has his hair. Lastly, I reach Dwayne.

"Hey, cowboy." I smile, going for the hug.

"Howdy." He hugs me back. "Quite a show y'all put on back there."

"Yeah, well, you know us. Just had to make an entrance." We laugh.

"Could've used your help on the way here." Connie interrupts.

"Yeah, we needed rancher Dwayne." Averman adds, prompting Dwayne to give us a confused look.

We proceed to tell him how Goldberg went rogue. Shortly after, we crowd around an ant farm - staring in awe.

"Look at 'em go. Woah." Fulton's face is almost touching the glass.

"You can learn a lot from ants."

We look up to see the Dean's face frighteningly close to the glass. His sudden appearance makes us all jump back. He starts talking about ants and societal structure - thinking we care. After he compares us to worker ants, Russ faces him and jokingly asks:

"And you're the Queen?"

We try to hold in our laugh. As soon as I look at Averman, we lose it and everyone follows suit. It's been an odd start to the school year but this guy seems like he has a decent sense of humour. A rocky start, but maybe this won't be as bad as I thought. Only time will tell.
