"Will we talk about the history of superheroes in this class?" Helen Jake blurted out as soon as I had put a picture of the Green Arrow and Flash. I smile at the smart board before looking back at Helen.
"Excuse my French but, oh hell ya." I grab papers off my desk and hand them out to the class. Although Central City is quite large, the academy where I work is quite small. Only the elite teach or learn here.
I've only been here for a year but I'm apperantly one of the best historians in the country. I don't doubt I'm the best, but I don't know how someone picked me out as the best.
"The first hero I ever heard of was the Green Arrow, a skilled archer with incredible precision and amazing fighting, he had taken out the worst of the worst." I go up to the smart board and click through the various pictures.
The students stare up at the screen as I flip through the pictures. No one breathes as I click a video of the Green Arrow fighting in the streets of Star City.
"Why are we learning about the Arrow? Central City has a much cooler superhero and since that's where we live...." George Keller scoffs in the back.
"Without the Green Arrow, the Flash may have never happened. The Green Arrow was the one who trained the Flash in." Helen rolls her eyes. George is about to say something but the fire alarm goes off.
I stare up in confusion, there was no fire drill planned for the day. The kids stand up with groans as I grab the emergency bag from the back of the room.
"Alright, you all know the drill," I sigh and motion to the door. The kids flood into the hallway, I see other teachers who look as confused as I feel. I walk up to Mrs. Harley as we walk out of the school.
"Was this planned?" I whisper.
"Not that I know of, seems weird to have a fire drill today." She frowns.
"What do you mean by that?" I raise my eyebrow as we turn down hallway that leads to the front door.
"Honestly Johanna, aren't you a history professor? It's the 6 month anniversary of the Flash coming to the city!" She smiles. I nearly laugh, the way she smiled was extreme creepy and made her look as though she was talk about her dream guy.
"You're married and you're much too old for the Flash, Kay." I tease.
"You're not, you're like what....25? Although he is a superhero, and he has to save the world all the time." She says in a higher pitch.
"If anyone would fall in love with any type of speedster, it wouldn't be me." I smile as we reach the doors to the outside. I see the sun shining but something else makes my skin curl. Before I can realize what's going I hear Kate Harley scream as a car is flown through the door. The kids in front of me drop to the ground, some of them are about to get hit but a yellow flash dives in front of the car and stops it. I don't question the color of the streak as I grabbed the dazed children and hide them behind classroom doors. Suddenly a red flash runs by and stops and I herd children in to rooms.
"Which way did he go?" He asks me. I stop and look at him and for a brief second I don't have words. It wasn't like he was beautiful or dashing, no pun intended, it was because I could breathe due to how fast he left before I could answer. I watched as the world around me was complete chaos and then in minutes, everything stopped.
I told the kids to stay where they were while I walk out of the school. I couldn't see much because there was so much smoke...however when I saw what was outside of the smoke I wish I hadn't left the school.
Piles or rubble and mounds of cars on fire littered the streets. There were bodies on the ground and some hanging off of the buildings. However the worst part was the fact that as I stood there, I saw the men with guns parading through the buildings. They were wearing black ski masks and baggy military clothing....
and they were shooting survivors.
Something inside of me snapped and I waited for one of them to come over to the car I decided to hide behind. As soon as I saw one I launched myself at one. We both fell to the ground, I began hitting him as hard as I could. He was so surprised that he didn't have time to call out before I felt his body go slack. I couldn't believe I had actually attacked a person and knocked them out.
I grabbed his gun and stared at it for a moment. I hadn't fired a gun like this, much less seen a gun like this. I held it awkwardly in my hand, before I had an idea.
I dragged the man behind the car and took off his clothes and put them on myself. The ski mask was hot and scratchy and I wanted to claw it off but it was a perfect disguise. I came out behind the car to see a man aim a gun at a survivor. In a quick panic I threw my gun at him and it hit him on the shoulder.
"What the hell, Gibbons!" He roared. He looked at me and then out of luck, a yellow flash came through and the man went flying. I saw the yellow stop I front of me.
"Wearing the same outfit as the enemy will confuse him. But it will confuse me as well." He said in a strange voice but he smiled. I felt my face warm up in the strangest way before he left.
I then began running towards more of the masked men. I wanted to look nonaggressive and it seemed to have worked because they accepted me.
"Gibbons, status report!" A big looking gentleman asked. My brain was moving and sprinting faster then I thought as I came up with an answer.
"We have to worry about two speedsters now sir." I speak in a scratchy voice. The man looks at me strangely but seems to rub it off.
They all turn to talk about something else and I look down at my gun. Before I can stop myself I start firing at them. My accuracy isn't great but my gun is so fast that I'm mowing them down quickly. Some yell in surprise and so do I. I finally stop and look at the men. Some are alive and injured, some are not.
I throw down the gun in disgust and fear. I put my hands on my head and feel my body heave as I sob. I fall to the ground and sit on the curb.
A sudden burst of wind makes me look up from the ground to see the red flash stop in front of the street full of men.
"What....wait who?" He asked as he looked up at me. I stand up but he ran up to me so quickly I start falling over. He grabs me.
"Why would you kill your own men?" He asks demandingly. I grab my mask and throw it off.
"I just had to...the kids." I manage to sob out. He looks at me in sorrow. He sighs but smiles at me.
"You're a hero." He hugs me. Its short lived because I watch a yellow streak run by.
"Gotta go." The Flash says before running after him.
I watch as they run off..
and I knew...
we would all meet again.
