His hand was on her knee

His hand was on her knee. Her hand was over his. He looked distracted. She looked amused. He whispered something in her ear. She responded with a giggle and a chaste kiss on the cheek that had me gagging.

Okay, fine, gagging and contemplating homicide.

"What's the maximum sentence in D.C. for two counts of first degree murder?"

I had meant it as a serious question, but the boy whose lap I was seated in seemed to think it was rhetorical.

"Don't even think about it," Michael scolded as he wrapped his arms tighter around my waist. It was as if he expected me to attack the canoodling couple at any second, and was trying his best to keep me far, far away. "We don't need any trouble right now."

I knew he was right, but it didn't stop me from scowling at Blair and Sebastian sitting on the opposite side of the courtyard. It was lunch time on a warm mid-April afternoon, and though it had been three weeks since my boyfriend and his fake girlfriend had gotten together, it still hadn't gotten any easier for me to handle. Had it not been for my ever-so-loving fake boyfriend and the late night rendezvous with my real boyfriend, I probably would have called the whole thing off ages ago.

I was still sorely tempted to. Seeing Sebastian and his ex together every day was beginning to take its toll on me. All the worrying about them possibly rekindling some sort of romance made me nauseous, and the bottled up rage that came from watching her fawn all over him had me battling migraines. Needless to say, this entire situation had me in bad shape. Only at night could I actually relax.

Unfortunately, during the daylight hours, all I could do was grin and bear the torture of seeing them together. I just hoped the sight of Michael and me together had the same effect on Sebastian.

"I'm not going to cause trouble," I grumbled, letting my head fall back against Michael's shoulder. "Well, maybe. Just not right now. I promise."

"Oh, sugartits, what am I going to do with you? You're a menace."

I shrugged, but his teasing tone did lighten my scowl some. "You should probably lock me up somewhere. Mental institution, possibly?"

"Is it bad that I approve of that idea?" he questioned innocently, leaning down to press his cheek against mine, allowing me to feel his grin. "You'd fit in mighty well there."

I had to purse my lips to keep from smiling along with him, unwilling to let him on to my amusement. "You're lucky we're pretending to be in love. Any other time I would have elbowed you in the gut."

"At least you weren't considering the groin." He shifted unconsciously below me, probably grateful that I hadn't issued a blow to the family jewels. "Hey, are you and Phillips getting together later?"

I quickly scanned the group of people surrounding us to make sure no one was listening in before answering with a slight incline of the head. "He's supposed to come over tonight. Why do you ask? You don't have anything planned for us, do you?"
