"You wrote it down?" I asked as I sat on the couch.
It has been about two days since we found a change on the tulip in my room. Apparently ever since, Camilo has been writing down every single detail about it.
"That's kind of something that Mirabel would do," I laugh.
"I think that we have to keep track of everything," Camilo said.
"I guess you are right."
He set his pencil down, "I'm bored, what do you want to do today?"
"I don't know," I thought for a moment, "oh! Should we make a cake?"
"A cake? Is it your birthday?"
I laugh, "no, but I enjoy baking. We can ask Julieta for her cook book."
"Okay."
I got up and made my way to the kitchen, Camilo following behind. I saw Julieta there talking with Mirabel.
"Hi Julieta, is it okay if we borrow your cook book?" I ask.
"Oh! Sure, y/n. But what do you need it for?" She asks.
"Me and Camilo want to make a cake."
"That's great! Can I help you?" Mirabel asks.
I smile, "sure!"
I looked at Julieta as she opens a drawer and pulls out a giant book, handing it to me. It is very heavy, how many recipes are in this thing? I place it on the counter and open it, trying to figure out how it's organized.
I laugh in confusion, "where exactly is the cake recipe?"
"Let me help you," Julieta says as she flips the pages.
'She knows where everything is by memory'
"Here it is!" She stops flipping and points at a page. All of the ingredients are listed and I thanked her.
"Okay!" I say, clapping my hands together, "let's get started."
We mixed everything together as it was written on the book. I'm not really good at baking but I enjoy the process of it. We were definitely not the best ones at this either, there was flour all over the floor and cake batter on the counter. After we are done with mixing it together, we put it in the oven and wait for about thirty minutes. Then, we start cleaning the mess that we made.
I turn to Camilo, "after the cake is done, can you get out of the kitchen for a minute?"
"Why?" He asks.
"I..." I thought about an excuse, "need to talk with Mirabel about something."
His face turns sad and I panic, "it's just for a minute! Please?"
He looks at Mirabel and she nods, he sighs, "fine."
I smile slightly.
When we finish, we just stay there talking and wait until the cake is done. Then, Julieta comes into the kitchen, "the thirty minutes are done!"
I nod to Camilo and he steps out of the kitchen.
"I can't wait to see his face when he sees his surprise!" Mirabel squeals.
"Can we come out?" A voice says.
I laugh, "yes you can."
The whole family comes out with balloons and preparations.
"I can't believe my baby is turning sixteen," Pepa says, tearing up.
"Okay, so, we have to put up the decorations quickly before he begins to suspect," Dolores says.
I nod and the whole family puts up everything while me and Julieta decorate the cake. After everything is done, it is up to me to bring Camilo to the kitchen. I go out, really excited to surprise him, but instead find him with his eyes red, I think he was crying. I start panicking, "Camilo, what's wrong?"
"O-oh y/n, I didn't see you there," he smiles and wipes the tears off quickly.
I look at him worried and he looks down, "it's nothing it's just...today is my birthday and no one has said anything to me yet. I was hoping that you knew something about it, but I guess I was wrong."
I smile sadly, "I'm sorry that you feel like this, but there is actually something that I want to show you."
He looks up and gives me a confused look.
I lead him back to the kitchen and the lights are turned off. As soon as we step in, the lights turn back on revealing the whole family with a 'Happy Birthday' sign. I look at him and smile, he looks stunned by the whole thing.
"H-how did you know?" He asks and I shrug, "the whole family told me like, four days ago."
He smiles and hugs me, making me very surprised but I eventually hug him back.
"Hey! We're here too, you know," I hear Mirabel say.
I break apart from the hug and smile at her. Camilo thanks everyone for the surprise and we walk over to the cake. Julieta lights the candle and we sing happy birthday. After that, Camilo blows out the candle. He looks very happy, and that makes me happy.
After this, we invite the whole town over to the Casita. And by the hour, everyone is already here. It surprises me that the town gets invited for every event that the Madrigals make.
Then, I felt someone tap my shoulder. I expected it to be Camilo but to my surprise, it was a man that I have never met. He looked about my age.
'What does he want?'
"Can I help you?" I ask.
"Yeah, beautiful, I've been watching you from far away.." he says.
'Now that's creepy'
"And I was wondering if you would like to go on a date with me," he winks and I freeze.
'What the fuck?'
"Do you even know me?" I ask.
"Um, no, does that matter?"
'Now that's disappointing that he actually thinks I'm going to go on a date with him'
"Well it does matter to me so leave me alone," I say and turn around but he grabs my wrist.
"Get away from me-!" I say but stop when I see Camilo right in front of us, with a hand on my wrist and glaring at the man.
"What are you doing here? This is none of your business!"
"This is my house so I think it is my business..." he says, smiling but in a voice that I didn't know he could have, "and that's my...friend."
'Friend...'
I didn't know those words could hurt coming from him. He snatched my wrist from the man and held my hand, then, he dragged me to the kitchen again.
"That scared me," he says, looking back at the door.
"Thank you," I say.
He turns to me and smiles, "don't worry about it."
We stare at each other for a while until a realize that he is still holding my hand.
"U-um," I stutter, "happy birthday?"
I walk out, dropping his hand. Felling embarrassed now, I went towards a table to get something to eat.
