"Why do we have to go to this?" Brooke asked.
"Because I said we would," I said. "Besides, he's an Alpha. If we don't go, he'll call every Alpha in the country asking who's missing pack members. We haven't exactly been kicked out of the pack yet."
"Why haven't we?" Liam asked.
"Because they're not going to kick out the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma's kids," I said. "To all other packs, that's treason. It's almost illegal to kick out the kids of the top three highest ranking werewolves. And my mom wouldn't let my dad kick anybody out of the pack. We need the numbers."
"Oh yeah," Liam said.
"So why did the guy call you and not Liam, H?" Josh asked.
"I dunno, J," I said. "Maybe because I have Alpha blood in me, so he thinks this is a pack and wants to talk about Liam joining his pack since he and Bella are mates."
The words tasted bitter on my tongue, but I ignored it. I'd have to get over Liam having a mate eventually. I knew any relationship I could have with him would be tragic, but he's the only one who can help me think straight at times, as insane as that sounds.
I hadn't told Brooke about Liam kissing me last night. Though I could tell something was up with him and he wanted more, I stopped before things had gotten too carried away. After all, he had a mate and should only be having sex with her, not me. So in a way I did him a favor, though it hurt me in the process.
I still didn't want to admit my feelings for Liam. I knew they were there, but I was hoping if I didn't acknowledge them, they'd go away. It would be better for everyone if they did.
"Well, we better get ready to go, the car is goin to be here soon," Liam said. "Josh and I can get ready in here and Brooke and Hayley can get ready in Brooke's room."
Josh frowned. "But w-"
"I need to talk to you," Liam interrupted. He leaned over and whispered something so quietly to Josh that I couldn't even hear with my werewolf hearing.
"Let's go," Josh said and they left.
"Well that was weird," Brooke said.
"You're telling me," I said. "C'mon, let's go get ready. We didn't go shopping for nothing."
We went and got dressed. I just ran a brush through my hair and straightened it, put on faded shorts and a white tang top, and my black and white converse. Simple and casual.
Brooke dressed up just a little bit more. She straightened her hair as well, but was wearing a summer dress and flip flops. She looked gorgeous, but she always looks gorgeous.
She looked at me and shook her head. "You've really got to expand your horizon. You wear the same thing, like, everyday."
"It works for me," I said. "Besides, my fashion sense is improving. Normally I would've just thrown my hair up in a ponytail, but I straightened it just for you."
"Uh huh," she said. "Still room for improvement, though."
I laughed and rolled my eyes. "You're lucky you're my best friend. Let's go see if the guys are ready."
We walked out at the same time as the guys did. They were both in jeans and button up shirts with a few buttons unbuttoned and the sleeves rolled up. Needless to say, they looked very attractive.
"Ready to go?" Josh asked.
"Ready when you are," I said.
Josh nodded and kissed Brooke on the cheek. I snuck a glance at Brooke's neck and was pleased to see Josh's claim on her neck. No more Joel's claim.
I looked at Liam and saw him staring at me. I gave him a curious look, and he snapped out of it.
"Let's go wait outside," he said and walked to the door.
Brooke and I exchanged questioning looks and looked at Josh for an explanation.
"Just guy stuff," he said and followed Liam.
Brooke and I shrugged and followed them. I was curious to what they had talked about, but I knew better than to ask. It was obvious Liam didn't want to talk about it, and I wasn't going to make him.
At 1:30 on the dot, the car picked us up. It was a black limousine with tinted windows, and I immediately became wary. Tinted windows were never a good sign with Alphas. It usually means there's something big going on.
Still, we got into the limo. The driver was a werewolf, as expected, and he drove silently. Liam was tense, and Josh kept looking at him like he expected Liam to do something. That was basically the whole ride to the house. Just tension.
We got out, and I stood next to Brooke.
"Something's not right," I whispered in her ear.
"I agree," Brooke said. "This doesn't feel right. Maybe we should've declined."
Just as I was about to say if we ran we could probably make it back to the hotel in time to leave, the Alpha came out.
He was in a black suit, and he looked about forty. He had graying hair and dark eyes. And they way he was looking at me wasn't a way that a forty year old man should be looking at a seventeen year old girl.
"You must be Hayley," he said, smiling at me. "I'm Derek. Thank you for coming."
"Didn't really have much of a choice," Liam muttered.
I shot him a look and looked back at the pervert Alpha. "You're welcome. These are my friends, Liam, Josh, and Brooke."
His eyes never left me as I introduced them. "Please, come in. It'll be more comfortable to talk inside."
He led us inside, me staying close to Brooke and as far as I could get from Derek. Something wasn't right with the way he was looking at me. It was just plain creepy and perverted.
We arrived in his office, and I shifted uncomfortably. I did not like this situation at all. Why did I say yes? I should've listened to Liam and made up an excuse not to come.
"Okay, I have a confession," Derek said. "I didn't ask you here to talk about my territory."
"Kinda figured that out," Liam muttered.
"Then why did you call us here?" I asked, ignoring Liam.
"Because Bella has told me all about you, Hayley," Derek said. "How you're the daughter of an Alpha and don't have a mate. It turns out, I lost my mate a couple of years ago as well."
"What are you saying?" I asked, suspicion growing.
"I'm saying, my mate left me without an heir," he said. "And the union of the daughter of an Alpha and an Alpha is unheard of. The pups would be very strong."
I gave him a horrified look. "No," I gasped.
"Yes," Derek said. "I would like you to carry my pup and make me an heir. Mate with me, Hayley."
