Lyra;

"The children usually don't come back till 2 pm, so we serve food at around 3." The lady who took care of the homeless shelter, Mrs. Jeramiah, showed both Liz and I around the shelter Shawn and his father resided in.

A week after the events that went down in the café, our friend group decided to start helping the shelter at least once a month. Today was Liz and I's turn to help. We managed to start petitions to gather enough money to help this shelter, but we haven't reached our goal yet.

"You can start by setting up the place for dinner," Mrs. Jeramiah pointed towards the dining hall.

I felt immense amounts of sorrow for the people who lived here after seeing the circumstances they must live in because it was the only option they had. Most of the time, they had to sleep at night in the cold because of the lack of blankets or sleep on empty stomachs because they didn't have enough food to fill them up.

These were people who lost their battles of life and became categorized as 'the unfortunate'. They deserved to go back to a warm home and sleep on a warm bed with a full stomach. But life decided to put its weight on their shoulders. So, we must step in and help them carry that weight.

For the past 2 hours, Liz and I helped around the shelter and served food for the kids who came back from school at 2 pm. It was beautiful to see the kid's faces light up in joy when they saw the table with the food we managed to cook from home and the food that was donated by our college's cafeteria.

We sat down with many of the people who lived at the shelter and heard their stories. Some were sad, some were filled with joy, and some were a mix of many emotions. They all had one thing in common; that no matter how hard it may get, there's always something to live .

I gazed out the window, only to see that the sun started setting, which meant that it was time for us to head back home.

"Thank you so much for doing this, you made many people happier today." Mrs. Jeramiah smiled and pulled both Liz and I into a warm embrace.

"We better head back now. We had fun today, thank you for having us." Liz replied.

"You're welcome anytime."

We left the building and made our way back to our campus. "Do you have any plans for this weekend?" Liz asked once we reached my dorm.

"No, not really. I was thinking about asking Apollo to go to the carnival beside the seashore. You're free to come if you'd like."

"That's great! We could all come as a group and have a friend night out." Liz proposed.

I hummed in response, "that sounds great, we can do it whenever everyone is free this weekend."

"Faith has a doctor's appointment tomorrow, so we can move it to the day after." I agreed to that.

"Okay then, text everyone to see if they are free, and I'll go speak to Apollo about this. I was going to his dorm anyway." Liz nodded and bid me goodbye.

I entered my dorm and grabbed a bag of snacks I bought this morning after school. Picking up my phone, I called Apollo. "Hey, are you home?"

"Yeah, why?" He asks.

"I was wondering if I could come over and watch a movie, I got snacks."

"There's a place I want to show you after we finish the movie though. Is that okay?" I hummed a 'yes'.

"I'll be over in 5 minutes." I bid my goodbyes, ended the call, and made my way out the door.
