Chapter 4 - Rachel Stark
We finally pull up to the building. We get out of the car and I walk him up (on stairs of course) to my apartment. I open the door, slightly embarrassed. My apartment wasn't a complete mess but it was close. There was a pizza box on the coffee table and my pajamas on the floor. Shoes scattered everywhere and the classic dirty laundry basket.
"Welcome to my home," I said softly, heat rising into my cheeks. I take a step in and throw my keys onto my counter and go straight to the fridge. "Are you hungry?" I ask Steve.
"Yeah," he says and then starts picking up the family room. Wait, is he helping me clean?
"Steve you really don't need to do that," I say.
"Hey, if it helps you out then I will do it. You're going to be my own personal sitter for the next few months, helping me out, so I should help you out." That, has been the sweetest thing I've ever heard from a guy, not like I've dated that many.
"Thanks Steve, you're so sweet. Is pasta okay?" I ask.
"Yeah, I think anything would be okay right now since I haven't eaten anything in about, eh, 70 years." He says, a hint of sarcasm in his voice.
I cook the pasta, and answer Steve's questions on where to put things.
When the pasta is finally ready, the family room and the rest of my apartment is tidy. I give Steve a plate of noodles. He sits down at the counter and I stand on the other side and the two of us start eating.
"So is there anything you want to know about me?" I ask, I want him to say no, but I want to trust him.
Being in the field that I am, you are always told "Don't trust anyone, your secrets have secrets." But after a while, you don't need to be told anymore, it is instinct. The only other person who knows about my past is Natasha. My past isn't as sketchy as some of the other top agents but it is kind of rough. Family, combat, etc. etc.
"I want to know all that I can, because I don't want you to be my baby sitter, I want you to be my friend." Steve says.
"Okay, well, get ready to be bored out of your mind," I say. "Okay, so my full name is Rachel Ellie Stark and I am 22 years old. I was born on July 4, 1990. I have one sibling named Tony who is a lot older than me. He has always out shown me. He's the invincible Iron Man," I say rolling my eyes, "I have been a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent since I was 18. When I was 6, my father brought me to work one day. Little did I know, my father was working on unfreezing a super-soldier. When I walked into the lab, I saw you, just lying there, you looked like you were sleeping. I made little discoveries about you. I asked my father about you, and Peggy," at the mention of her name, I saw Steve tense. I continued anyway. "They helped me understand your serum and the way your metabolism worked. I gained all of my knowledge during those years, my best years. But then, when I was ten, my parents were killed in a car crash. I was devastated. That year was the hardest. Tony was in his own world grieving, inventing to get through his problems. But I was learning even more through my grieving, because I would spend every day in the lab. I would spend every day with you, checking your vitals and studying you irregular pulse. This might sound stalker-ish but you were the only one who kept me going. You were like a part of my father. You were his project. And then when all of the weird tests showed up, they wanted me to do it." At this point, there was no holding my emotions anymore, tears fell down my face. "I couldn't. I just couldn't. And I wouldn't let anyone else do them. No one wanted to go through a 14 year old so nothing happened. That same year, Tony started to come around again and we got closer, like we should have been. He taught me how to drive, his girlfriend Pepper taught me to cook and clean." I paused wiped the tears off my face and looked at Steve. He was just staring at me not in a creepy way but he was just listening. "When I was 16, I got my first boyfriend. He was perfect. Handsome, kind, giving, willing, open. I thought I loved him. But then one day, he stared to get violent. He'd slap me or tell me mean things. And then, it got worse. Beatings, to the point where I thought death was the better option," I rolled up my sleeve and showed him the line of scars. "He would get knives or screwdrivers, anything metal and heat it. Press it into my skin and leave it until I would scream out in agony. And I couldn't do anything. I couldn't call anyone because he would hurt them too. I was taken to a secluded cottage. I suffered there for two years until S.H.I.E.L.D. found me. They knew I was smart. Fury especially took me under his wing and really helped me get back into the world. I worked hard for the past four years and now, the only agent who can give me a run for my money in a fight is Natasha. I like where I am now. And I am glad I finally have a friend." I finish. I look at Steve whose face is a mixture of emotions. Happy, sad, concerned, and scared.
"Well I think that is enough story for tonight. You can have the bed, I'll take the couch. We can go shopping tomorrow. Please try to get some sleep okay?" I tell Steve.
"I'll try" he says.
"Okay, good. I CALL BATHROOM FIRST!!" I laugh as I run into the bathroom.
This adventure is going to be the best one yet..
