as september gave way to october, cold winds started blowing steadily across the grounds, making for uncomfortable walks down to the greenhouses and the care of magical creatures paddock. quidditch practices turned into battles against the weather as much as anything else, and even some of the more old-fashioned students started to think longingly of muggle clothing styles that didn't involve quite so many flapping robes.
the teachers, knowing that the distraction of halloween and the first getaway week-end of the year were both fast-approaching, started piling on the homework in hopes of getting the assignments completed before their charges' attention was completely eaten-up by other things. every year at beauxbatons an annual autumn ball is hosted and everyone is encouraged to go with a date.
the autumn ball is hosted on halloween which, that year looked to be a cold, wet holiday. neither the gloomy weather nor the rumors and whispers fluttering around the school in the wake of the of the missing student ruin the firstgetaway of the school year.
as the week-end approached, most talk in the castle turned to the nearby magical village of avalon, and of course to the traditional holiday feast that would follow. avalon was a small village less than a mile away from beauxbatons filled with shops and a square to explore. all students would be free to visit if they chose, and even the teachers would get something of a day-off.
in the staff-room there was brief discussion of cancelling the excursion due to the mysterious circumstances, but in the end it was decided that giving the students a chance to get out of the castle for a day wasn't likely to put them in any danger.

NOTABLE LOCATIONS
the square || the center of avalon. shops of all sorts and restaurants can be found in the heart of the small village. it's the main social hub and is always lively during the day.
the weaver's hut || the inn where all of the visiting beauxbatons' students are told to stay at. it's ancient and is rumored to be built from the hair, skin, and bones of mortals. every student is permitted to have a roommate as there is two to a room.
pools of starlight ||small lakes of silvery liquid. people believe it is from when a star melted into the world long ago. lovers often come to swim in its waters but be careful, and beautiful nymphs and mermaids often are found deep inside, luring people into its depth.
evergreen gardens || the pristine gardens are kept in great condition. all manner of flora is grown here. some flowers are known to heal minor injuries and many creatures roam the gardens.
