It was the icy kiss of rain that brought Lisa back to where she stood, wielding a sword that took her a year to familiarize herself with. No matter the weight it held, no matter the ache in her bicep, she wielded it with power as she drove it through soldiers after soldiers.
Groans of pain, screams and torment bellowed through the field she fought on. Arrows flying, and nearly scraping the side of her silver metal helmet. The armor she wore weighed heavy on her shoulders but strong she looked, strong she felt.
And it was all because of a single person.
Her person.
Running past her enemies and behind a broken stone wall, Lisa hid. She ripped off her helmet, panting with sweat coating every part of her skin, maybe blood from the scratches she took upon the battle field.
She held her helmet with hands so shaky and calloused and stared at her disheveled appearance. Her eyes watched the tips of her fingers trace her reflection. So sad, so dark.
"When you spend so long trapped in such darkness my love, you begin to notice the darkness staring right back," Lisa whispered
Almost a year Lisa had stopped writing and not because she wouldn't but because she couldn't. The war had only gotten worse but they will win. She will win.
And all because of a letter. The last letter.
Please come back to me.
"I will," Lisa spoke, teeth clenched as she immediately placed her helmet back on. She refused to allow the darkness victory because the light in Jennie's smile, eyes and soul never ceased to escape Lisa mind. It kept her away from teetering to utter despair.
Letters after letters they shared and the more she received them, the more she realized she loves her.
Lisa loves Jennie. She must tell her. She must.
She gripped tightly on the handle of her sword and ran back into the field. Slicing through, and screaming with the men that fought along side her, fighting for their own families, their own lovers, their own life.
Come back to me.
She blocked a sword but groaned as it nicked her arm, her skin.
Come back to me.
Lisa fought. She needed to fight.
For Jennie, for her love.
And Lisa screamed as she watched her sword pierce through a soldiers heart the finals soldiers heart, his blood blending with the wars blood on her heavy sword.
Come back to me.
"Jennie?"
Jennie turned over from where she slept, facing her bride as she slowly fluttered her beautiful brown eyes open. She softly smiled,
"You're awake?"
Lisa softly laughed before handing her a letter and Jennie instantly sat up and stared in curiosity. The blonde smiled,
"It's the letter that I was never able to send."
And so, Jennie gently took it from her lovers hand and unfolded it.
My love,
Yes, I refer to you as my love.
The war has begun and has been unkind. It is dark and cold and oh so loud. But, I endure it. I endure so I can return to someone who refuse to let me crumble into darkness, who refuse to let me disappear into nothing.
You.
You're the reason I want to live. You once wrote to me to never dare let the hard days win. So, I won't. I will win. For me, for my kingdom, my father and most importantly, you.
I'll come back to you.
I promise.
Love,
Your monkey
"I promised didn't I?"
Jennie moved her tearful eyes to Lisa and giggled, before leaning close and capturing the blondes timid smile. She pulled back slightly,
"You did, you came back."
Lisa smiled and kissed her lips softly and perfectly.
Lisa was back.
