Chapter #21: Don't Catch Feelings
A/N: Please vote & comment (tell me if you like Asher or not...). Love you guys, happy reading :) p.s: highly suggest listening to the song on the right... you won't regret it.
I nibbled on the salad I had ordered just moments before, as Asher sat across from me on the table. He had his head down, staring pointedly at his grilled cheese sandwich.
"Aren't you going to eat?" I asked, lightly putting down the fork on my plate.
He looked up as if he were in daze, then slightly shook his head, as if shaking away his thoughts. He blew a puff of air from between his lips, and took a large bite out of his sandwich. "Sorry, yeah."
I raised an eyebrow, my eyes falling across the empty diner. There was no one but another couple sitting in a booth across from us. The music played quietly in the background, as the waitress wiped tables beside us. "I'm starting to think you're the one getting super distressed here, Asher."
He chuckled, shaking his head. "It's really nothing."
"Just tell me? You've been so quiet, and since everything with Veronica, I don't know where you stand."
He shrugged his left shoulder. "I'm not involved nor do I take any interest in what she had to say by the way, Peyton. She had a very ignorant opinion, one that many other's may have as well. Don't let people like her make you regret your decision. You did what was best for your life, and the baby."
I poked my fork through a hard crouton, and watched it crumble. "I know. I just couldn't believe that she didn't even try to be a little supportive. It just sucks, you know?"
He nodded, rubbing at his eyelashes tiredly. "I know. I've never seen Veronica act that way... That's why you have me."
I nodded back, curtly, looking out the window. "Still, what's on your mind Asher? You're missing a lot of your college classes too aren't you?"
He was silent momentarily as he collected his thoughts. I pushed my half empty plate of salad across the table, and folded my hands together, looking patiently at him.
"No, I registered for online courses a while ago. I just stay in my dorm, because I don't want to leave this all behind... And Laurel and I are officially done," he said lightly. "I told her I didn't want to see her, so she left. I'm not too sure where."
I frowned sadly. "I'm sorry. What did you do about the whole fake pregnancy thing?"
His face went a little red as if he was getting angry all over again. "I don't think I've ever yelled so loud in my life," he laughed sheepishly. "It's not something you lie about, right. It was just ridiculous, and I was angry, and I told her to get the hell out of my face. And so she left. Haven't see her since."
"She really liked you."
He scoffed, rolling his eyes. "As if."
I pursed my lips together, and stared blankly at the table. We had come out to the little diner to grab some food and eat, but we were doing just the opposite. Neither of us seemed hungry, and it proved so when we arrived, with the food in front of us. I just didn't have an appetite. The salad was good, a solid 10$, but I had gotten stuffed for no reason whatsoever after the first few bites.
"How are you holding up?" Asher suddenly questioned, and I chuckled.
"Oh man, everything is just always about me around here."
He sucked a breath in, nodding with a gentle smile on his face. "The attention is fun, isn't it?"
I narrowed my eyes. "Asher, none of what I'm- we're going through is to be taken for attention. I guess I'm just a person with an extremely eventful yet horrifying life."
