Lani's P.O.V.
"Guys, this isn't going to work. I might as well just not go at all." I said as we all went through several costumes for me to wear tonight. "Hey Lani, I think I have the perfect costume. Lets go, kids. Thanks Ronnie." Auntie Rhonda said. "No problem." Uncle Ronnie replied. "Thanks, Uncle Ronnie. Tell Aunt Shamari, Ronald, & Roman I said hi." I said as we all left the costume shop. "I will, Lani. Have fun, but not too much!" Uncle Ronnie said.
We all drove to Auntie Rhonda's house where everyone waited while I put on a dress that was my mom's. I looked at myself & thought I looked alright. Time to see what everyone else thought. I walked downstairs in the dress all covered up with a white mask on, my makeup was natural, & my hair was curled. "You look beautiful!" Auntie Rhonda said. "You look gorgeous, Lani. My baby cousin is all grown up!" Mary Jane squealed with excitement. "Mary Jane, please. Sound like a damn barnyard animal. But, yes, you look pretty Lani." Chris said. Mary Jane & Auntie Rhonda smacked Chris upside the head.
"What y'all hit me for?!" Chris asked. "I ain't no barnyard animal, & I can be excited for my cousin." Mary Jane said. "Talkin' bout my baby like that, & I told you bout that cussing in my house!" Auntie Rhonda said. "Sorry, Ms. Rhonda. Sorry, Mary Jane." Chris said. "Alright, everyone's ready? Let's go." Auntie Rhonda drove us to the dance & I was starting to have second thoughts.
"I can't do this." I mumbled to myself. "Guys, I can't do this." I said out loud. "Lani." Chris said. "Come on, this is your chance to get your dream boy." Mary Jane said. "I know but, what if he isn't who I expect?" I said. "Give me your phone." Mary Jane said. "What?" I questioned. "Give her your phone, Lani." Chris said backing Mary Jane up for the first time. I gave her the phone with a sigh releasing from my lips. "Midnight, we leave. You'll get your phone back." Mary Jane said.
I watched Chris leave & walk down the stairs. "Lani, give me the robe." I gave Mary Jane the robe & she walked down the stairs, I walked from the corner I was hiding & a light focused on me with everyone else looking. "What's everyone staring at?" I heard Chris say, then he looked at me shocked. I walked down the stairs finally with my converses poked out as I walked each step. I walked to the middle of the dance floor waiting for my mystery guy to appear out of the shadows.
Devante's P.O.V.
That girl looks beautiful. That's probably PrincetonL. "Hey fellas, what's up." "Nigga, why are you in all red, I thought we was wearing black?" K-Ci said. "I was confused too. I asked him in the car & he didn't answer me." Dalvin said. "Well, I really don't care. We supposed to be chilling. Ol' girl look nice in that dress. I wonder who she is?" Jojo said. "She's my date." I said going over to her.
Lani's P.O.V.
"We meet again in the middle of the dance floor. Fate truly does work." I heard a familiar voice say. I turned around, seeing Marcus. "Marcus, you're PrincetonD?" "I am what you want me to be." Marcus said dancing weirdly around me. "Marcus, I'm really thirsty." "Punch for the lady, I'll be back." Marcus said leaving really fast making him trip over. "I knew it was too good to be true." I said.
"PrincetonL? With a smiley face?" I turned around to the one voice that sounded so deep, a puddle of wetness could appear. "Devante, you're PrincetonD? There's no way." I said. "What do you mean, ma?" "I mean, I want a guy who's real with me. You just don't look like the type. Also, are you with Natalie?" "I'm not, I never was. People just assumed that, you assumed that didn't you?" Devante asked me. I put my head down to avoid him looking in my eyes.
"Devante Swing, with the lady. A devasting blow to the heart." Marcus said coming back with the drinks. "I'm sorry Marcus." I said. "It's okay, have fun." Marcus said side-hugging me & then leaving. "Friend of yours?" Devante asked me. "I'm usually friends with most of the rejects. I'm a reject myself." "I don't believe you're a reject." We looked at each other while Mya's Fallen was playing in the background. "I love this song, I just really love Mya." I said. "Do you wanna dance with me?" Devante asked with his hand out.
I took it & we danced until Devante wanted to take me outside. "So, what do you want to do after High School?" Devante asked me. "Well, I want to either be in Princeton for Engineering or Social Science. And, you want to be in Princeton for Music." "Yeah, music is my passion." "So, we're out here why?" "Because, I wanted to get to know you without anyone else around." "That's really sweet of you, Devante." "Another dance?" "Sure." We slow danced without music & after a while, he kissed me.
"Devante, I-" I got cut off by the bell ringing. "I have to go!" I said running off. "Wait!" He said running after me. "The winner of the contest is, Cinderella & Devante!" The DJ announced. Mary Jane, Chris, & I ran away from the dance as we all got into Auntie Rhonda's car & my stepsisters Gabby & Charlotte saw me. "Mom! Look, it's Lori!" They said simultaneously. "What, where is she then?" Felica asked sarcastically. We heard her car pull off & we raced to get back to the diner.
"Where is Lori?" Felica asked. Luckily, I rang the bell. "Order up!" I said. Fixing my jeans, I walked out & set the pancakes on the table. I felt my pocket & noticed my phone was gone. "Guys, come here. My phone is gone." "What do you mean, your phone is gone?" Mary Jane said. "Yeah, Mary Jane gave it to you." Chris said. "I think I dropped it, while we were running." I said. 'Someone must have it, it might be Devante!' I thought in my head.
