Kai didn’t want to move out of Detroit, he really didn’t. But Nathan, his mom’s boyfriend, needed to move for work. Kai was somewhat pissed. If he moved he would have to get adjusted and try to find more people to work with. And the fact that they were moving somewhere in the suburbs of Colorado made it harder for Kai.
Kai walked downstairs and greeted Ty with a small smile. He had just finished unpacking the majority of his things. He went into the kitchen where Nathan was, his mom and sister were out at the grocery store.
“I’m going out, I wanna get familiar with the area,” Kai said to his step-dad.
“Alright,” Nathan said before catching Kai before he could walk out the door, “wait, can I talk to you first?” he asked.
“Yeah, I guess,” Kai said, he was skeptical, all his other step-fathers were assholes. He learned quickly to not trust anyone easily.
“Let’s go in the back,” Nathan said, opening the back door.
Kai cautiously walked out with him, not letting his guard down.
“What’s up?” He asked.
“I just wanted to talk to you about something, and I wasn’t sure your brother knew about it,” Nathan said.
“Ok? What is it then?” Kai asked again, getting slightly annoyed.
“It’s about your work,” Nathan said.
“About what?” Kai had to do a double-take.
“Your work, I know you know what I’m talking about. I do something similar to you. But, I want you to forget about it here, you don’t have to worry about money anymore,” Nathan explained.
“Why are you bringing this up? What is it to you?” Kai seethed.
“It matters because I don’t want you to be in this life,” Nathan said.
“Why though? Why do you care? You barely know me,” Kai said.
“Because a kid like you doesn’t need to be doing the stuff you’re doing, especially when you don’t have to,” Nathan explained.
“Fine, whatever, but if anything goes wrong on your end, I’m taking over,” Kai said matter-a-factly as he started walking away.
“Alright,” Nathan started, “Oh, by the way, I’m taking you and your brother shopping tomorrow,” he said.
Kai didn’t answer. He didn’t like going shopping with other people, they always told him that he should pick out girlier clothes. His mom always misgendered him and dead-named him, she didn’t care enough to try and accept him.
Kai started wandering around, noting what street he lived on so he could find his way back.
