CHAPTER 40

SAMHAIN

There was silence.

The sound of their own breaths, the ticking of clocks, the nightly chirping of crickets and birds in the forest - all these noises they were so used to, seemed to have been sucked into a silent void that was even deafening to their sharp ears; They too were paralyzed to the point of not even breathing: they just stared with glazed eyes at the beautiful light spectrum in the middle of the living room, the blue-silver light illuminating them through the darkness like a star or a lighthouse.

The situation of having a spirit in front of them should have been terrifying, but they weren't terrified – they were shocked, surprised and stunned, but not terrified.

The reason for that was because they knew that spirit.

They saw him when he was still a little boy with golden hair and bony knees and saw him grow into a beautiful young man... They saw him declare his love and make promises just as saw all the misfortunes that kept him from fulfilling them... They watched him die and be resurrected as well as of his long life until the day of his natural death under the eyes of a wizard and his familiar.

They knew him – or at least that's what they felt, even though they'd never seen him or met him in person. It didn't matter.

The fact was, Cedric Diggory was there, with them, his image formed of blue-silver light as if it were a mirage or a dream. He was there as if he'd come straight out of Harry's diary, perfect in his eternal youth and beauty, yet no longer human; He was standing there with his head held high and looking straight at only one of them who was also looking back at him, completing that strange symmetrical and opposite image as if they were two mirrors facing each other.

Cedric was looking at Edward and Edward was staring back at him, one filled with seriousness and sadness and the other still petrified by the shock of the surreal situation.

"I don't have much time, so I'll be direct." Cedric said without looking away, his voice echoing through the room "Why?"

Edward blinked his eyes and exhaled through the mouth, feeling a shiver run through his body like an electric current. He opened the mouth to speak but closed it. He didn't know what to say or even how to say it.

"Why did you betray Harry?" Cedric questioned him again as he took a step forward, his luminous aura pulsing "Why did you break all the promises you made?"

The vampire breathed heavily, surprised by that question and such direct accusation coming from his deceased rival that he never thought he could face or even confront. But the surprise was also the trigger for other emotions: soon the resentment and the pain made him come out of his state of shock and finally react.

"My motivations..." Edward whispered, lifting his chin despite his nervousness "My motivations don't concern you. I don't owe you any explanation."
