The curtain veiling the cool, dim room from the cruel embrace of the outside world swayed softly with the caress of the wind. The gloomy light of the new moon, though obscured, shon against the fabric with the aid of the enthusiastic stars and gently lit up the room. All was still, all was quiet. Although it was a hospital there seemed to be a lack of emergencies in the early hours of the algid French morning, though patients would still come and go. One patient in particular, a young and frail woman, was not in her bed. The sable-haired woman knelt carefully in front of her premature son's incubator, her hand resting weakly through one of the holes along the side of the incubator for him to latch onto. Despite the dull light of the room, it was as if it was illuminated with an incandescent glow to her - he lit up the room. She beamed with pride at her little creation, thrilled at the thought of how her mother would disapprove. Her mother had told her numerous times that interspecies hybrids were a repulsive "crime against God" and it made her smirk to imagine the look on her face when she saw that her grandson was no human, but a hydrus. She had little tolerance for the disapproving word of her mother, to her it made no difference whether her son was a troll, beldam, human or vampire. He was her son, no matter what any ancient "Word of God" said.
A sharp jolt shot through her spine as he let out a hoarse cough, feeling melancholy at having to restrain her maternal instincts. All she could do was examine him and hold his hand with her finger. She analysed his pointed ears with curiosity, imagining with excitement how she would get to watch him grow into his own person. How different would his growth be from hers, she wondered, how many aspects of his draconic heritage would shine through? She couldn't wait to find out. She exhaled tenderly as he drifted delicately back into slumber, quietly whispering her wish goodnight.
"Sweet dreams, my Lucius, my little light."
