A loud ringing fills my ears. My whole body is on fire. My head is pounding, a sharp pain shoots through my right shoulder and, judging by the weird sensation, I'd say my leg is broken.
My eyes flutter open and I see everything in a cloudy haze. I try not to panic when all I can see is destruction. I blink my eyes a few times to try to clear my vision but my attempts are futile.
The front windscreen of the jeep is completely gone. All I can see is shattered glass and the splintered wood from the huge tree that is now mostly in the front half of our vehicle. A large part of the tree seems to have fallen onto the roof of the car; the roof is dented and every few seconds creaks from the amount of weight placed on it. How it hasn't given way yet is beyond me. Another large branch has come through the windscreen and is now jammed between Ruby and I. I let out a sigh of relief that it didn't hit either of us.
My head throbs as I slowly turn to look at Ruby, everything spinning as I do. Fear consumes me when I realize that I spoke too soon. Ruby's arm, which she was trying to open her seat belt with, has been pushed back to an unnatural angle. I feel sick the longer I take in her appearance. Blood covers her face and a large cut is stretched down her face; from her left temple, down to just under her cheek bone.
My head continues to throb and I close my eyes as the pain becomes unbearable. I open my eyes once more to further asses Ruby's condition. My eyes snap to her stomach once more and I let out a strangled cry of fear when I realize that the lower half of her body is covered beneath splintered timber; between the cracks I can see that her other arm is wrapped protectively around her swollen bump.
"Ruby," I groan hoarsely. "Baby." I ignore the blinding pain in my shoulder as I try to reach across to Ruby. Making sure she's okay is the most important thing right now. "Baby, please wake up."
The pain in my shoulder becomes unbearable and I let out a yell of pain before I succumb to the darkness once more.
The shrill sound of sirens fills my ears. My eyelids feel heavy as I struggle to open them. I look up towards the passenger seat and see that it's empty. Ruby's gone.
"It's okay, son," I hear from behind me. "We're going to get you out. Everything will be okay."
I let out a sigh of relief when I realize that the paramedics have already taken Ruby from the wreck that once was my jeep. At least she's safe now.
"Son, can you hear me?"
I open my mouth to speak but no sound comes out. My eyes feel heavy all of a sudden. My ears begin to ring louder than before and it becomes a strain to stay awake.
"Ruby," I mumble.
The last thing I hear before darkness takes over again is the panicked voice of the paramedic beside me. "Son, I need you to stay awake. I need you to stay with me!"
I shield my eyes from the brightness when I open my eyes for what feels like the fiftieth time today. I don't think I ever blacked out so much in one day before. It doesn't take me long to figure that I'm in a hospital room. My shoulder is heavily bandaged and from what I can tell, so is my leg. Pain shoots through my entire body with every breath I take.
Before I have a chance to do anything else the door to the room opens up and in walks a young male nurse.
"Ah, you're awake. How are you feeling?" He asks.
"Where's Ruby?" I demand. I have no intentions of answering any of his questions until I find out how my girlfriend and my unborn daughter are.
"I'm sorry, who?"
"My girlfriend. She was in the jeep with me when we crashed. She's eight months pregnant."
The nurse shoots me a confused look before excuses himself from the room for a moment.
I wait impatiently in the room for what feels like an eternity before a doctor walks into the room followed by the nurse and a police officer.
"Where's my girlfriend?" I ask, panic in my voice now. Fear is consuming my mind as all the worst possible scenarios whirl around in my brain. "Where is she? Please, tell me she's okay. I need to know!"
"Can you please tell me your name?" The doctor asks and I instantly throw him a harsh glare. He cuts me off when I open my mouth to shout abuse at him. "I need to know your name so I can contact your family. Once we know your name I will answer your questions."
"Ryan Butler. Now, tell me where she is!" Tears begin to build in my eyes and I don't make any attempt to wipe them away. I don't care who sees me crying, I just need to know that my baby and our daughter are okay.
"Do you have any allergies to any medication?" The doctor asks.
"Where the fuck is my girlfriend!" I shout, completely agitated now. I attempt to push myself out of the bed, my shoulder screaming in protest but I ignore it as I desperately try to escape the confinements of the bed.
"Mr. Butler, please stay still," the Doctor says as he and the nurse push me back down into the bed. "I promise I will answer your questions as soon as I have the medical information I need. Please."
Exhausted from my struggles I nod my head in defeat.
"Do you have any allergies to any medication?" He repeats, a pen and clipboard now in his hand.
"Do you have any history of depression?"
"Have you ever attempted suicide?"
I freeze before looking up at him. "You think I did this to myself? You think I'd put my girlfriend, my heavily pregnant girlfriend, in danger? What kind of person do you think I am?"
I don't think I've ever felt so much anger towards a person before. How could he think I'd do such a thing? I love Ruby. Yes, I love her. I love her so freaking much! I'd do anything for her. I'd never harm a hair on her head!
"No, I have never attempted suicide nor have I ever considered it. My girlfriend, who I love more than anything in the world, is eight months pregnant and she was in that crash with me. I want to know where she is and I want to know where she is now!"
The Doctor nods his head in understanding. About fucking time! He shares a look at the police officer standing behind him before turning to look at me once more.
"Mr. Butler, I can't tell you how your girlfriend is, or where she is for that matter."
I swear my hearts stops in my chest. Bile rises in my throat and it takes everything in me not to hurl as images of Ruby dead swirl around in my mind.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, Mr. Butler, you were the only person removed from the vehicle from the crash site."
A lump forms in my throat and my eyes swim with tears once more. "What?"
"Your girlfriend wasn't in the car when the paramedics got there."
Sorry it's so short >_<
Please let me know what you all think!
