Chapter 7

Charlotte’s P.O.V

I sat back down on the bed whilst Matt spoke to Johnny on the phone.

Every so often he would give me an apologetic look.

I smiled and moved closer to him on the bed, placing my hand on his thigh.

“Yeah, Johnny I know. I took the fucking DNA test. The baby isn’t mine.”

Matt held a look of complete horror on his face. I assumed this was about what he had just told me.

“Tell Brian that I don’t give a flying fuck what Michelle has said to him.”

With that, Matt abruptly hung up the phone. He let a deep, long sigh and placed his head in his hands before bringing them down his face and meeting my concerned gaze.

“What’s wrong?” I asked. God, I hoped it wasn’t his baby.

“Nothing. Val just wants to take another DNA test – in case the last one was a mistake. I swear to God that woman is living in a fucking dream world.”

I opened my mouth in the shape of an O getting ready to speak, but Matt interjected, “she won’t leave me alone. I woke up this morning with thirty missed calls and forty six new messages from her. I don’t even want to check my voicemail.”

I placed my hand on top of his. I gave him a reassuring look and he forced a smile.

“You don’t have to pretend with me anymore Matt,” I said. “I can see how much this is affecting you. I want you to talk to me about it. Whatever is troubling you.  I’m not going to see it as a sign of weakness.”

Relief flushed over his face.

“Well,” he started reluctantly. “I knew she was sleeping around before we went on the Nightmare After Christmas Tour. It didn’t get to me because I knew that I was no longer in love with her. Then she comes to me with the news that she’s pregnant. I knew immediately that it wasn’t mine so I demanded a DNA test. We got it done a week ago and now she is trying to emotionally blackmail me and I-”

“Matt.” I bellowed. It was the only way he would listen to me. I was trying to end his outburst and prevent any rage from sparking.

“You have to calm down.”

Matt’s P.O.V

I was just so fucking angry, but not at Charlotte. How could I be? We had only just met and yet – she seemed to be the only one that was willing to listen. The guys were torn. Brian was Val’s brother-in-law. And Johnny and Zacky thought that they owed to Val for helping Avenged Sevenfold gain fame.

I felt Charlottes hands enclose around mine. She moved her body closer and I wrapped my arms around her.

“Matt,” she whispered finally. “Promise me that you will talk to someone, if not me, about all of this. It’s unhealthy to supress all of your anger and hurt. One day, you’ll snap and someone will be on the receiving end of your rage.”

As she looked up at me I gazed deeply into her eyes. I saw nothing but compassion, empathy and sincerity.

I smiled and kissed her neck, moving down to her collarbone. I felt her hand move around the back of my head and she turned her head to meet my lips.

“How long are you in Canada for?” Charlotte asked inquisitively.

“Another two weeks.” I answered, and then there was silence. I knew what she was thinking.

“But, you know, after that, we’re on a break. I think we are going to start working on a new album.”

“Cool.” She retorted bluntly.

“Whoa, do I detect a hint of hostility in your tone?”

She didn’t answer me.

“Hello?” I removed my arms from around her. “What did I do?”

“I’m just thinking. When you go back to Huntington Beach, am I going to be just another woman?”

“No! Hell no!”

She raised an eyebrow at me.

“I really, really, REALLY like you.”

I knew that she believed me – but I could tell she was in a fragile place.

Again, I wrapped my arms around her. “What’s wrong? What happened?”

She released herself from my grasp and turned to face me.

“I really don’t want to talk about it.” She shrugged.

“What happened to “it’s unhealthy to supress all your anger and hurt?” I responded, quoting her.

She sighed and shook her head, standing up. I rose with her and took hold of her hands. I raised my eyebrows in a questioning expression.

“Well, I too got cheated on. And it was horrible – the worst thing that I have ever experienced.”

“Do continue.” I demanded.

“Argh!” She exclaimed. “What is there to continue with?” Her voice had softened. “I came home to our apartment to find a note explaining that he was no longer in love with me and had been seeing another woman. I don’t even know where he is.”

I leaned forward and kissed her supple lips.

“From now on, Charlotte, we’re kindred spirits.” I whispered in her ear. She looked at me and smiled before returning my kiss as we fell  backwards onto the bed.
