"Y/N, HELP SETTLE THIS little boy in!" my aunt cho-hee yelled, her grand voice echoing and bouncing between the thin walls of the orphanage so smoothly that it was enough to silence the cacophony of toddlers laughing over the childish games they were playing. i sighed and excused myself from the room, promising the little humans that i'd be back to play goalkeeper in just a few minutes, but they just continued to engage without me anyway.

just a few steps inside the orphanage door stood a little boy crying, one hand loosely gripping his suitcase as his other clung onto a young woman who i presumed to be his sister. my heart wrenched to see him in so much distress, but i have gotten used to it after helping my aunt out at the orphange for a little over a year.

"look, this is y/n, okay? she will bake you some cookies and get you some juice while your sister and i speak, okay?" aunt cho-hee pleads to the little boy in attempt to halt his sobbing.

the little boy looked at his older sister whose very pretty face also looked distressed— and did not budge. aunt cho-hee shot me a pleaful look to help, so i approached the boy and bent down to his height in order to speak to him.

"what is your name?" i asked softly.

"kang-cheol," he replied wearily, still failing to meet my gaze.

"okay kang-cheol, do you want some cookies and juice? we can sit at the table right over there," i offered, pointing to the dining room table a few feet away from us. "and we can draw or do whatever you like."

he hesitantly nodded after giving no response for a while, only after looking at his sister for approval, which she accepted without words— she only spoke through her mysterious but cold eyes. as i looked up at her, she was looking down on on me. out of nervousness i quickly got up and took cheol to the kitchen because something about her made me nervous, but i'm not sure if it's because she looked intimidating or because the light of her situation.

kang-choel finally settled down after he ate some treats and talked to his sister who i came to find out has the name sae-byeok. what a pretty name for such an warrior like girl, i thought to myself.

after he was settled, i walked outside and near the playground where aunt cho-hee and sae-byeok was, eventually standing beside my aunt as she and sae-byeok discussed the situation between her and young cheol.

"and where will you be staying? you can't be out here all alone, it's too dangerous," aunt cho-hee said in worry. secretly i had been pondering on the same thought too because after all, sae-byeok looked really young- maybe around my age- and she must lack residential security of her brother winded up here.

"i don't know," she said bluntly. "but i will be fine as long as my brother is fine."

"you cannot be possibly fine without a place to live," aunt chee protested. "how about you reside with my niece until you get your living situatuation figured out?"

i would've scoffed but i did not want my aunt or sae-byeok to hear that i was annoyed by auntie's remark so i stayed quiet. although aunt cho-hee is a selfless person, sometimes her nice actions oversteps people's boundaries— especially mine. in this case i did not care, but i usually don't invite strangers into my home. lucky for sae-byeok, something about her made me trust her, or maybe the way she intrigued me made me want to know more about her anyway.

"no, i'm okay," she said. "i don't want to cause any trouble."

aunt cho-hee chuckled. "trouble? you can't nearly cause as much trouble as y/n does!"

i rolled my eyes. "auntie, if she says she is fine, then she is fine. but sae-byeok, if you ever do need a place to stay, call me or drop by my house at anytime. i'm usually at my house after 6pm."

i scribbled my address and phone number down and gave it to sae-byeok, who looked at me questionably before taking the note.

"thank you y/n," she said. "but i really am fine."
