𒊹CHAPTER FIVE𒊹

Start from the beginning

As much as the older hated to admit it, Sang-woo dressed so much "classier" than he did. It was as if Sang-woo skipped so many steps of the social ladder. But, it was probably because he was a business student and that's what was appropriate.

He picked up a black button up shirt that appeared to have something in its front pocket. Gi-hun didn't want to snoop but he couldn't help himself. He picked out a folded item that felt too thin to be any old sheet of paper, but thick enough to be a photo. Opening up the photo, Gi-hun's heart melted, and his face softened. A photo of two children hugging each other tightly was revealed. One of them wore glasses and had a bright smile, while the other smiled ever brighter with messy hair.

The two children could be recognized as Sang-woo and Gi-hun, and he remembered when the photo was taken. His mother had taken the photo on his 11th birthday and made a copy for both of them to keep. It warmed his heart that Sang-woo still held onto it. Gi-hun kept his copy in his wallet. Turning it to the back, his melted even more that he could almost cry. His 11 year old handwriting was on the back, scribbled into a message for Sang-woo. Whenever they'd take photos, they'd write messages on the back. It was a made-up tradition for the two of them specifically.

"Sang-woo ah...my bestest friend in all of Korea..thank you for an awesome birthday and another year of laughing and playing. Please never stop being my best friend, no one is as cool as you. Love, Gi-hunnie." Gi-hun heard Sang-woo re-site the message from the doorway, causing him to turn his head.

"You remember it by heart?" Gi-hun asked, embarrassed. He'd normally smile about it but couldn't bring himself to. Sang-woo nodded and walked up to him.

"It's hard to forget. But nothing will beat the one you gave me when I left for college..." He replied as he retrieved his wallet from one of his bags, pulling out a photo of them when they were younger. He flipped it to the back, where a longer message was written in Gi-hun's old handwriting.

"Sang-woo ah~ Congrats on making it into SNU! I can't believe that time has already come! I'm so happy for you. Before you leave me for all that business stuff, I just wanna say thanks. Thanks for keeping your word and staying friends with me :) thanks for the ups, the downs, and everything in between. Thanks for being one of the best Squid Game players but don't tell the other guys I said that. Thanks for being there for me. Thanks for giving me a reason to smile every day. Thanks for being one of many reasons for me to smile. Thanks for all the unforgettable memories..
Please don't ever forget me when you're famous and own your own big business! I hope we can keep in touch and stay friends after it's all over. I love you, my special friend!

From the guy that walked you to school everyday, Seong Gi-hun "

Sang-woo folded up the message again and put it back in his wallet. He sighed. He never knew if the "I love you" that haunted his heart was meant to be a confession or if Gi-hun meant it as a friend. He looked back up at a dumbfounded Gi-hun.

"Kind of crazy that I...don't have that business you were so worried about. And I'm sorry we..didn't actually keep in touch." He said sadly. Gi-hun just went up to him and pulled him in for a hug.

"It's okay. We're here now and we're still friends. In the end, we're together again." He said softly, feeling Sang-woo's arms wrap tightly around him. After a moment, their embrace broke and they just exchanged eye contact.

For a moment, Sang-woo wanted to do what Gi-hun did in his dream. He nearly did. He nearly answered that desperate voice in his head. But..

"I'll get dressed now. Is it alright if we see my daughter today?" Gi-hun asked, going back to pick out a pair of pants. Sang-woo lightly sighed and nodded.

"Yeah. Yeah, that's fine.." he said, picking out his own clothes to wear.
