Mason Cooper
She was gone. For real. I knew she had left early this morning, so I drove by her house. It was weird seeing it like this. Normally there were several skateboards and outdoor equipment in the yard and the grass was always cut. Now the yard was empty and overgrown, they must've not had time to cut it when they were busy packing. Their driveway which usually had at least four cars was now empty as well. It looked so lifeless.
I continued down the road, moving on. I couldn't understand why things worked out this way. I kept thinking that if Ethan had never showed up on Charlie and my date, we might be together. She might've realized that night what I really meant to her and we might be together. Instead Ethan showed up and found out what I'd done to get the date set up and he ruined everything. Looking back on it, it always seemed to either be Ethan or Andrew who screwed things up for me. I hated them so both with raging passion.
I turned down several streets, getting out of Charlie's old neighborhood. So lost in my thoughts, I nearly jumped out of my skin when my phone rang.
"Hello?" I answered, not looking at the contact before I picked it up.
"Hey, Babe. Are we still on for tonight?" Jasmine asked in a sultry voice.
Shit. I nearly forgot that the two of us were dating now and that I promised to take her out tonight. "Yeah, I'll pick you up at 6."
"Cool..." Her voice trailed off and I could practically hear her devious smile. "And you said your parents are at a conference tonight too, right?"
"Yep."
"So we can go to your place after?" She asked suggestively.
"Definitely." I tried my best to muster up some excitement, but I couldn't. Honestly, I didn't care about Jasmine at all. She was a good fuck and I looked good having her at my side at school, that was it.
As I held my phone to my ear, it started buzzing again. I pulled it away from my ear to look at who else was calling me. Cameron Collins.
"Hey, Jaz, there's someone on the other line, I gotta take this."
"Alright, see you tonight." She hung up and I answered the next caller.
"Hey, Cameron."
"Hey, cuz."
"What's up? We haven't talked in a while."
"Yeah, not since Easter." He sounded tired. I wondered what made him call. My cousin and I were never close but we always had fun together when we saw each other. But outside of family vacations, summers, holidays, and reunions, we barely talked.
"You okay?" I asked, slightly concerned.
"I just wanted to tell you I'm not coming this summer."
I felt my brows furrow. "Why? You guys come every summer."
"I'm sorry, I can't really talk about it, there's just some stuff going on. My dad--" He stopped himself. "We just have to stay in New York this summer."
Now I was even more confused. Cameron had never known his father. He's had a couple of stepdad's over the years, but never a biological father. Why would he bring his dad up?
"Cam, you know you can tell me anything, right? I can keep a secret."
"Marley has to go to this camp all summer." He said simply, bringing up his younger sister.
"What does she have to do with you?" I asked.
"I might have to go too, we just don't know what's going on yet."
"Ok..." I decided not to push him anymore, he sounded stressed enough. "I guess we'll see each other at Thanksgiving then."
"Yeah."
"Just keep me updated, ok? Don't forget you can talk to me."
"Yeah, thanks, man. And please don't tell your parents yet. Mom'll call them later." He hung up before I could answer. I set my phone down and drove the rest of the way home thinking the conversation over.
Marley had to go to a summer camp, and he might too. He mentioned his dad even though as far as I knew he's never met him. As a matter of fact no one in the family knew anything about his dad. I don't even think his mom knew much about him. Cameron knew what was going on but he said he couldn't tell me.
I thought it over again. They live in New York, outside of the city. Summer camp. Absent unknown father. Secrets.
Oh. My. God.
I instantly picked up the phone and called Cameron back. "Mason?"
"Your dad. He's a god isn't he?"
There was silence on the other end. "I don't know what you're talking about." He said finally.
"You don't have to lie to me, Cam. I had friends who were the same way, they told me."
He hesitated. "Yeah, my dad's a god."
A lump settled in my throat. I had demigods in my own family and I didn't even know. "Do you know which one?"
"No. Marley's going to go to camp and find out."
"And you're not?"
"No, most people start at Marley's age I guess, I'd kinda be an outsider if I went."
"I know people there, I could talk to them. You wouldn't be an outsider."
"I'm not going, Mason. We're sending Marley and Mom and I are going to pack the house and move somewhere closer to the camp where it'll be safer for us."
"Ok... Well, keep talking to me about this."
"I will." He promised then hung up again.
A plan was beginning to hatch. One even better than all my plans in the past. I now had a direct connection to Charlie in New York. I was going to finish what I started. Charlie was going to be mine and in the process I was going to ruin Andrew and Ethan.
Once and for all.
Hey guys, this is the end 😭. There's going to be an epilogue then that's really the end of Legacy. I'm working on my outline for book 2 now and you'll probably see a chapter or two of that within this month or the next.
Question time!
1. What do you think Mason is plotting for book two?
2. Cameron, is going to be an important character in the next book, what was your first impression of him? What kind of effect do you think he's going to have on the Jackson's life?
3. Are there any characters you do or don't want to see more of in the sequel?
Don't forget to vote, comment, and follow!
Thanks so much for all the amazing support I've received on this book! I really appreciate you guys and I hope you stick around for the sequel!
