Chapter 11

Peter’s POV

The moment seemed like forever. Her lips pressed against mine felt like the water I thirsted for. If only kisses lasted like this forever. She started pulling away, and pushed against my chest. There was confusion in her face.

“I can’t Peter. I want to, but I can’t”.

“Why?” The only words I could utter echoed in my mind as I stared into her eyes. Then, I knew. “It’s Stephen. Who ever he is, he’s the reason why you can’t. Isn’t it?”

She started to nod up and down, and then stopped. She shook her head. “Maybe yes. Maybe no. I’m not sure. I just know I can’t now.” She turned and started to walk away.

I followed, keeping pace behind her. “I don’t know what he did to you. I wish I could fix it for you.”

She turned suddenly. “You can’t. He’s dead. That’s what no one can fix.”

Oh shit. I’d really put my mouth into it this time. I caught up to her again and wrapped my arms around her. She fell against me. Her crying made me regret my words. Any words I’d said to start this fountain of tears. I just held her. I didn’t know what else to do.

Her crying turned to sniffing. Then, she looked up at me. “He was my first.” Tears glistened in her eyes. “He promised we’d be together forever. Then, we had this fight. He ran out the door and got onto his new motorcycle. He was upset. I know it. I think he would have been more careful going through traffic. He got sucked under a semi-truck going in between the cars.”

She inhaled a deep breath. “I just hope he didn’t feel pain.” She grabbed close to me again.

I wrapped her in my arms and kissed the top of her head. “Now I understand. That would be hard for anyone to go through. How long ago was this?”

She was muffled as she talked against my chest. “Over a year now. Going to school in Ohio got me away from everything. All the memories. But lately, I can’t fight them off. I feel so guilty, because…”

She hesitated. Looking up, she continued. “…Because I keep thinking of you.” Her mouth was exquisite. She looked up with a longing I couldn’t resist. I bent down for the softest of kisses. I pressed gently, letting the feeling linger, seeing if she’d press back.
