As much as I supported George and his new job, one thing I was not excited about was the first morning rush. While I wouldn't be getting up every day for him, I obviously had to the first day because he was my fiancé and I wanted to help.
Unfortunately, he had to get to the high school by 7 AM, and we lived about half an hour away. That meant George needed to be awake and dressed by 6:30, and today, so did I - minus getting dressed.
I fixed him a quick breakfast of cereal while he prettied himself up in our room. Obviously, Nick was still asleep, because in our opinion, no one should be up this early if we can't help it. Again, as much as I support George, it feels a bit arbitrary to go to work on top the jobs we have now. But if he's passionate enough about it, then there's really no issue.
"You all set?" I asked, worried.
"Think so. You gonna get lonely?"
"Absolutely." I ran a hand over his combed hair and gave him a kiss on the lips. "But since you're passionate about this, I'd never dream of preventing you. Just remember; no pictures of me."
"Of course. Love you, Clay."
"Love you too."
And with those words and a last hug, he was off.
And after that, I learned just how little I had to do without him. Sure, normally I could spend half a day editing, but we had planned it so that there's no video work this week so George could focus on his teaching position. The only other things to do would be to watch something or play games all day, which I guess will be what I do.
Still, I couldn't shake the feeling of loneliness. I guess I got too used to George being home all the time so now that he's gone all day, it feels weird. Nick wasn't going to be up for another few hours, either, so I was left all alone until then. Out of sheer boredom, I decided to get dressed and go get some groceries that we needed.
Fortunately, my return happened to coincide with Nick waking up. As soon as I had everything put away in roughly the right spot, he came down and started grabbing some cereal. Patches was at the foot of his stool, looking at him and then me intently. I crouched down to scratch her chin while Nick continued to eat his breakfast.
"So..." he asked between spoonfuls. "What do you wanna do today?"
"I really don't know," I sighed, standing back up. "I feel kinda weird."
"Me too. I mean, obviously it's worse for you since you're his fiancé and all, but it's kinda weird to think that he's going out and having an 'actual' job."
"Yeah. I hope he likes it, but at the same time..." I looked away guiltily. "Well, I wouldn't complain if he didn't."
Nick shook his head. "He's been serious about this for close to a year. I doubt it'll work out like that."
"Yeah."
He washed out his bowl and moved to the couch. The cats all followed, begging for attention. Not wanting Nick to be the single father, I diverted their attention with some food.
"None of them seem to care about George, huh?" I commented.
"Seems like it. Although the little guy seems sad."
Indeed, George's little shorthair was looking around in confusion while the other two ate. He had already eaten a little bit, but not much because he was more curious as to where George was.
"Hey, Clay," Nick said abruptly. I looked over at him from my position by the fast.
"What's up?"
