I was not expecting to see her here. As soon as I walked inside the cafe, I made awkward eye contact with her. I looked away and pretended I didn't see her.
"Dining in or taking out?" The waitress at the front asked me.
"Dining in, I'm having some people meet me here, I need a table that seats a few." I told her.
"Ok, this way." She led me to the table right next to Charlie and her friends' table. As soon as I sat down I pulled on my phone and pretended to look busy. Of course, I didn't do anything on my phone because I was in direct earshot of their conversation. Naturally, I had to listen.
"What do you mean you're leaving?" Hayden asked. I never liked Hayden, I've known him for a long time but we never really got along. We have vacation houses near each other so I saw him a lot during the summer time. Our parents are friends but the two of us didn't click.
"My uh parents decided that they want to move back to New York, I didn't tell you guys but I'm from there, I moved here four years ago."
"Why are they going back? Did they get a new job or something?" Elliot asked. Honestly I was surprised he was even talking to her. After what I told Xavier to tell him, I thought he would hate her.
"Well Cast is going to college up there and my parents want to be closer. We have family there too."
"So when are you going?" Danielle asked sadly.
"Um, well we'll be totally packed by the end of the week."
"So soon?!" She gaped. "We only just got you, you were supposed to come back after the summer! Not totally leave!" I heard Danielle's voice break. Were they really so attached to her after only a few days?
Hayden reached over and held her hand. For some reason a wave of jealousy passed through me. Charlie put an elbow on the table and rested her forehead against her hand. "I don't want to leave you guys, it's just not up to me. It's better for my family if we move, and I can't hold them back." She sounded like she was crying.
For a second all the hatred I felt towards her vanished and my old feelings returned. I don't think that I want Charlie to leave.
"Are you going back to the city?" Kinsley asked, looking down at the table sadly.
"No, a small town on Long Island." She replied.
Long Island, was she moving to her camp? Maybe she'd be living with more freaks of nature like herself.
"City to small town? That's a big change." Elliot mumbled.
"Is where you're moving anywhere near Montauk?" Hayden asked.
"A little over an hour, I think. Why?" She said.
"Just wondering. I've been to Montauk." He shrugged.
The door to the cafe opened and Lacey and Jasmine walked in. They spotted me and sat down at my table.
"Why the hell are you sitting next to them?" Jasmine lowered her voice.
I shrugged. "The waitress just sat me here, but get this, Charlie's moving."
"What? Where?" Lacey asked.
"Long Island, New York."
"Seriously?" Jasmine rolled her eyes. "So everything we've been working on is for nothing?"
"I guess. Senior year's going to be a lot more boring now." I sighed.
"Is that why she wasn't in school today?" Lacey asked.
