After an exhausting couple of days with Lily at the hospital and the intense love-making session they had had the night before, Stevie had slept in much longer than she had been allowed to recently and she felt refreshed when she finally awoke.
Reaching her arm out behind her, she blindly searched for Lindsey on the other side of the bed, slightly disappointed when she could not feel him there beside her. Having learnt her lesson from the first time it had happened, she assumed that he must have got up with Lily and so she slipped into her long, silk dressing gown and made her way downstairs to investigate.
As she approached the bottom of the stairs, an all too familiar sound danced into her ears and she followed it until she was standing just outside the living room. Stevie slowly poked her head into the room and had to stifle a laugh when she caught sight of Lily sitting propped up against a mountain of pillows on the couch with a huge, gummy smile on her face. Lindsey was sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of her with his back to the doors and his guitar in his lap, his fingers tickling over the strings effortlessly as he played out the sweetest sounding melody and hummed softly along to it. It sounded like something from a fairy-tale.
Stevie leant against the doorframe and just watched the two of them for a little while. She was instantly transported back to a time when she and Lindsey were just two young musicians, desperately trying to make it big in the music industry. The scene was so reminiscent of all the days Lindsey would spend sitting cross-legged on the floor of their studio apartment, strumming and picking away at the strings of his guitar, patiently waiting for that tiny spark of inspiration to hit him. She thought about the simplicity of their lives back then and how so much remained the same, despite how much had changed for them. Their hunger for success had now been replaced by a desire much deeper than either of them could have anticipated: their desire to be a family.
Never once had Stevie thought she would ever see such a beautiful sight, and that instead of seeing Lindsey sat cross-legged in front of some empty Chinese take-out boxes, he would be sitting in front of their gorgeous little girl.
Stevie’s heart skipped a beat at the thought that this was what the next few years would be like for them.
“That’s beautiful, Linds,” she beamed as he whipped his head around to find her there, leaning against the doorframe.
“How long have you been there?”
“Long enough,” she smirked.
Stevie sashayed across the room and knelt down beside him, before placing a tender kiss on his waiting lips. Lily squealed at the sight, as she always did, and they broke apart with a laugh.
“Hello to you too, Little Miss Giggles!” she said, taking the baby’s face between her hands and kissing it several times.
Stevie sat down on the couch facing Lindsey and held Lily in her lap, wrapping her arms around her little body and resting her chin on the top of her head.
“Play something for us then, Daddy,” she chirped, cocking her head playfully.
Lindsey smiled as Stevie took Lily’s arms and clapped her tiny hands together to the rhythm, as he played the same melodic tune he had been playing over and over again all morning. He hummed and hummed, seemingly searching for the right words to sing over the melody. When his brow furrowed and his eyes became distant, Stevie knew he had slipped into another world altogether.
“What are you thinking about?” she asked softly.
“I was just thinking about how wonderful the last few weeks have been,” he smiled bashfully and dropped his eyes back to the guitar. “I don’t want it to end…”
