Mason Cooper (sorry guys, he's alive)
I'm pretty sure I'm dead.
I was still sitting at the table in the back when I got thrown against the wall. I was confused. I was sitting there mulling over what Charlie had said to me. I had tried to figure out what my next move was, but then something exploded and next thing I knew my back hit the far wall and I went out cold.
When I woke up I heard screaming, yelling, and more explosions. I heard talking too, coming from nearby. It sounded like Charlie, I had gotten excited, but when I tried to speak no sound left my mouth. I then realized I was buried under a pile of rubble. Nothing was actually on my chest, but one large piece of rubble was being held up by another rock next to me by only an inch.
I tried wriggling out but as soon as I moved I groaned in pain. My right arm was pinned under a pile of rubble. "Oh God." I breathed. Tears pricked at the corners of my eyes, pain shot up my limbs.
Did all of this happen because I figured out the truth about Charlie's life? She warned me things would be dangerous once I knew. God, why didn't I listen to her. I knew she was right, about everything. I was a terrible friend and nothing about me had changed. I did feel her struggling when I kissed her, but I held her there. I was sure she had to have liked it, there still seemed like there was no way she could genuinely be with Andrew, she just refused to believe it.
I was sure that laying here like this, I was going to die. With my free hand I reached up and put a hand on my throbbing head. God, it hurt so bad. When I pulled my hand away, my fingers were coated in blood. I felt like I could pass out. I turned my head and tried to get a better look at my arm that was stuck. My bone had to be broken or shattered or something. The pain was unbearable. I stared up at the ceiling and closed my eyes. Maybe if I fell asleep, I would wake up feeling better.
But when I closed my eyes, all I could focus on was the pain. I tried to think of something else, anything else. Charlie. Did she really mean what she said? Was she really just done with me? How can you just drop a person like that. We had been good friends for so long, she didn't even try to make things better. I started to get angry. I thought back to when we were friends. The more I began to look past the things I liked about Charlie, I began to notice things that I hated.
She was always so absent minded, she was oblivious to things happening around her, she ditched me for her brother or for Lizzie all the time. She led me on for months, making me believe that she was into me as much as I was into her. Then she hid her relationship with Andrew from me, leading me on even more. She embarrassed me in front of our entire class at my own party, then she got mad at me! I did nothing. Then she got mad when I tried to show her the truth about her boyfriend. I was just looking out for her, but she got angry. She called me one of her best friends but she hid the most important part of her life from me. The more I thought about it, the more I realized it was true -- Charlie Jackson was a terrible friend.
I hated her. The more I pictured her, the angrier I got. Why had I tried so hard to get this girl? After everything she did to me, why did I like her?
Oh, now I knew what I would do. Now I had a reason to get out of here alive. I had to get my revenge. Charlie treated me terribly, now I would make her life next school year terrible. Her and Ethan both. Our friend group had fallen apart, which means next year we'd find all new people. I had my soccer friends, and the girls from the volleyball team tended to follow us around. I would have no problem making a new group, but I would make sure it would be impossible for Charlie to find new people. She shouldn't be able to be a bad friend to other people like she was to me.
I smiled to myself. This was what she deserved.
"Mason?! Mason, can you hear me?!" Speak of the devil. Her voice travelled over the sound of all the commotion.
Sure, I hated her now, but I needed someone to get me out of here so that I didn't die here. "Charlie?" I coraked.
She came into view, holding Lincoln up by his arm over her shoulders. She carefully helped him to sit down, then rushed over to me.
"Oh my gods, are you stuck?" She kneeled over me, her dark hair wild and face smudged with dirt and grime. I had to admit, she looked hot. As terrible as she was, if anything were to ever happen between us, I wouldn't be against it.
"My arm"
"Gods, you're bleeding so much." She lightly touched the wound on my head, I flinched and grit my teeth. Why was she being so helpful and gentle now? She said she was done with me not even an hour ago.
"I'm going to free your arm, when I lift the rock, move it away." She instructed.
"Can you even lift that thing?"
"You'd be surprised what years of training at camp and fighting monsters does for your muscles." She joked. She stood with a leg on either side of the rock, then squatted down and held it on either side. "Ready?" She asked. I nodded.
She began to lift the rock, slowly at first, she closed her eyes and her facial features scrunched up in concentration. I looked like she was really straining herself but she lifted it. I quickly moved my arm, pain shooting up my broken limb. She groaned then dropped the rock when it was clear.
She quickly rushed behind me, hooked her arms under my shoulders, then started to pull me out. Once I got out to my waist, I pulled myself free.
"Thank you." I stood on shaky legs. I think I had lost a lot of blood, and the pain in my arm made me want to pass out.
"We need to get you to an ambulance. Can you walk?" She asked.
I tried taking a step but spots danced in my eyes and I felt like I could faint. I shook my head. She helped Lincoln back up first, putting his right arm over her shoulders, then she walked over to me, and I put my left arm over her shoulder, letting my broken one hang lifelessly at my side. She walked slowly, under both of our weight, but managed to successfully get us out of the building. She was definitely a lot stronger than she let on.
Ethan ran up to us and took Lincoln from Charlie, lifting some weight from her shoulders. "What happened? Are they dead?"
Ethan nodded. "Andrew and I finished Joe Bob off, the other one got a taste of Bella and Lizzie."
"How did Lizzie do?"
"She's fine, shaken up a bit, but she held her ground. She's going to be very bruised tomorrow."
Charlie nodded and kept walking towards the flashing police lights. "What story are we telling the police?"
"Andrew came up with it; we were a block over, heard the explosions coming from where we knew some of our friends were. We got scared for them, drove over here, and saw the bikers. They were drunk and terrorists. They had cannons and kept blowing things up. We tried to stop them and fought a bit, you and Bee went into the building to try and help the people inside. The bikers' cannons misfired and they blew themselves up, that's why there's no bodies."
Charlie snorted. "He's the worst at coming up with this stuff. Drunk biker terrorists?"
Ethan shrugged. "Hey, it works." He looked between Lincoln and I. "You two say that you saw the bikers then there was an explosion and that's all you remember."
I nodded and so did Lincoln. I still planned on ruining Charlie's social life, but I still knew this was something I needed to keep a secret. This was what happened when people like me knew their secret. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if someone else died because I said something about this.
I saw the paramedics, leaving the building with two body bags. I knew it must've been the elderly couple sitting right by the front window when it exploded.
Charlie got me to an ambulance, and I was rushed into the back of the vehicle. She walked away without another word. When the ambulance doors closed and we began to drive away I couldn't think about anything except all the ways I planned on making her life miserable.
