For a moment the world stops spinning and everything is out of focus apart from him. I stare at him, my fingers still clasping the bronze door knob so tight I feel like I could snap it off just like that. His eyes are as cold as ice, his lips as red as blood and charred from the winter.

"Alison Rain. Now that is not the face I was expecting to see.." The man I had longed to see for so long says in his usual snarky voice.

"Well, I wasn't really expecting you either." I mumble, words not being able to from themselves properly in my startled brain.

My eyebrows frown as I notice how stiffly he is standing.

"That place changed you didn't it?" I ask, even though I know the answer. My dear Kai is once again a psychopath.

"Guess you could say that, Ali.. Is that what they call you now?" Kai says, a smirk tickling his lips. "Ali. I like it."

"Look, Kai -" I start, my golden locks stroking my cheeks.

"Malachai, now actually. I decided I liked it after all." He smirks.

"Malachai, whatever. It's been two years and we've obviously both changed... So I think it would be for the best if we don't share our past with everyone." I say.

"Very well, Ali." He says, picking at his cuticles obviously not particularly fased.

I raise my eyebrows at his ignorance but decide to ignore it. I know well enough that he is not the Kai I used to know, so I can stop wishing.

"Did you come here out of the blue, or are you looking for someone?" I ask.

"Indeed I am, Damon Salvatore. Is he here?" He replies, his chestnut hair effortlessly whispering in the wind.

"Why do-" I begin, but instead Malachai pushes past me and into the Salvatore residence.

"Damon?" He calls.

Immediately, Damon comes flying round the corner, his fists clenched into tight balls, his eyes like shards of ice.

"Malachai.." He breathes, his face reflecting evident shock.

"The one and only." Malachai grins. "Anyway, I came here for a favour."

"Why on earth would I give you a favour? You shot my best friend in the stomach with a freaking arrow!" Damon exclaims, his hands waving around the tense room.

"I am well aware of that, thank you Damon. And if you grant my favour I know how to get Bonnie back." Malachai offers.

Sighing, Damon replies. "Go on."

"You let me stay here and I will get Bonnie out by tomorrow morning."

Damon scratches his chin, his eyes suddenly filling with hope. "Why do you want to stay here?"

"That doesn't matter, but you better let me stay otherwise your little Bonbon will be stuck in my prison world forever."

"Fine!" Damon exasperates.

____________

Later that evening, I lie in my bed thinking about everything that went down today. Damon coming back.. Kai coming back. It's funny, you know, if you imagine something happening for so long happening so perfectly and when it does finally happen everything shatters to pieces. It's like everything in your world starts to tumble down on top if you, suffocating you until you are too tired to breathe.

I had imagined it all so perfectly, running into his arms laughing with joy, birds singing at our hearts melting back together. But instead he is a psychopath who can't remember me or can't be bothered to remember me. And then just as you think your world is starting to melt back together, it blows up, leaving pieces scattered so far that I can't even see them anymore.

How am I going to fix this? Can I even fix this? It seems like it's so badly broken all I can do is throw it away...
