"It's fine—"
"I'll make sure to properly compensate you and everyone one day."
Nyx took a look at the straight eyes that held sincere determination. He couldn't find it himself to deny Yu Yan. It was the with the same straight eyes that piqued his interest from the very first meeting.
"Oh, and how exactly are going to do that?" Nyx breathed out a puff of smoke.
"Hmm...I'll figure it out later ah." Yu Yan snapped his fingers.
Shaking his head, Nyx mumbled, "Twenty-two years old and you're still a kid."
"What?"
"Listen", Nyx leaned back on his chair as his terminal shot information directly to Yu Yan's own terminal. It lit up and the information displayed. "If you want to compensate, your compensation must be of the same worth."
Yu Yan found several big files neatly organized by folder. Captain's strict conduct could easily be reflected upon the rows of properly compiled learning materials. They even had their numbering sequence.
"This is...?" Yu Yan trailed off, glancing at Nyx with a confused expression, head titlted.
Nyx coughed a few times in his mind, but his countenance remained stern. He should really find some way to remove this cuteness filter that's permanently set on this person.
"You should learn how to transcode."
Coding meant to handle computers and gadgets within one's reach or through a network. However, ever since the Alhoshian empire studied the high spec technology of the Nurdyk, coupled with the need for engineers and programmers to be able to code and troubleshoot even on several planets so many lightyears away with no proper network system, they have devised ways to accomodate such needs. One of these methods was transcoding where the spiritual power couls also be used as a link to the devices and new technology. However, this also gave rise to greater shields and firewalls against hacking. The empire's main control system or brain was the hardest and never to have been hacked. It never lacked any new challenger every minute of the day.
Yu Yan searched for the word for a while. Having been taught the basic principles and theories, as well Xiao Ba as reference, he had a clear concept of everything despite his initial lack of experience. "You...want me to be a programmer?"
"No, I want you to be a hacker", Nyx corrected and then added with emphasis, "by three months."
Yu Yan: For a moment there, I thought you wanted me to get a decent occupation. Scared me ah!
"I'll study hard to be the best hacker for you, Dad." Yu Yan winked, completely agreeing to this unreasonable demand.
Nyx really wanted to chastise Yu Yan for calling him Dad, however, whenever he tried, he found that he really couldn't say it.
"You're not going to ask me anything?"
Yu Yan pretended to think, "Well, it really was my fault this time. Although I am intrigued for the reason why, I can more or less guess it. Besides, you're letting me get away with it, so even if you're trying to intimidate me like this, I know you won't sell me off to some distant part of the galaxy."
"Letting you get away, huh", Nyx briefly thought that his punishment of learning to transcode for three months was simply 'letting you get away with it'? He sighed. Never had he sighed so much in this life until Yu Yan came. "You like learning, right?"
Did his mew Dad really see him like that? Yu Yan nodded, nonetheless. It was much easier to agree than to explain that he was merely curious about a lot of things that weren't available in his original world. He genuinely wanted to know how they worked.
