I sat on the bed, doodling whatever came to mind. I never really draw, but whenever I have a lot on my mind, I doodle some things. It helps me relax and all that.
At first I started with just the regular smiley face and hearts like everyone does. Then as I went on, I began drawing more intricate things.
I let my imagination run and drew anything that came to mind. Trees, lakes, anything.
Brooke came in about halfway through my drawing of a tree with a noose tied around one of the branches. I had been thinking about a Hanging Tree for some reason.
"Hey," she said. "Whatcha doin?"
"Nothing," I said, setting my notebook down. "What are you doing?"
"Just checking in on you," she said. "You haven't been out of the room all day, I got worried."
"I'm fine," I said. "Just decided to have a lazy day today."
She raised an eyebrow. "Without me? You've never done that before. What's going on?"
I sighed. "I just had a call to make, then got bored. So I decided to watch some movies and doodle."
"Why didn't you call me over?"
"You need to spend some time with Josh. I've been a burden for you two since we've got here, so I thought I'd give you guys some time alone."
"Oh." She was quiet then sat on the edge of the bed. "So, what's going on with you and Liam?"
I shrugged. "We're friends again. That's all we can really be with his mate around."
Brooke studied my face. "You love him, don't you?"
I stayed quiet, not quite ready to admit the truth out loud.
"I care for him," I said, choosing my words carefully. "He's one of my best friends, and I don't want anything bad to happen to him."
Brooke nodded. "Understandable."
I looked at her and immediately knew something was bugging her. "Alright, spill. Something's wrong, so tell."
She sighed. "Do you wanna know something?"
"Yeah," I said.
"When I first found Josh, I thought about rejecting him."
"What?!" I was astonished. Brooke and Josh were so cute together and worked out, I was so surprised she had actually considered rejecting him.
"I know, it's stupid. Josh is great and I love him, and it's stupid for me to even have considered that. It was just the thing with Joel," she said quickly.
"Go on." I wanted to hear more.
"Well, I had just gotten over Joel. I was still hurt my mate had rejected me, and so when I found Josh, I didn't want to get hurt again. That pain that I went through was almost unbearable the first time, I could only imagine what it could've been like the second time. What I'm trying to say is, I was scared to get my new mate."
"I am too," I admitted quietly.
"Why?" she asked.
"Because what if he's another Tyler? I can't handle both of my mates being total jackasses. Just, I want this relationship with my new mate to work out, but I'm scared to find him. And after all that has gone on between me and Liam, well, I don't think my new mate would want me."
Brooke nodded, but still looked uneasy. "There's also this one thing that I don't know how to explain to Josh. He hasn't asked about it yet, but I know he wants to know."
