John's POV
I slump onto my bed, thinking of Jame's words. I don't think Peggy's the type to lie, but I also don't think James would, well, you know...accept this whole thing, I guess? I don't know. But James does seem a little old for Peggy. I shake my head. I know why I don't want them together. I...I love Peggy. But they seem happy, or at least fine as a couple. I don't want to ruin it.
I need to confront Peggy about this. I knock on her door.
*"Shut up you little s!ut! Someone's here!" James. Why would he say that? The door opens and I step inside. Peggy is finishing pulling her dress over a bruise I don't think she had before. *"John ol' buddy!" James smiles, extending his arms like he wants a hug. I shrink away.
"What were you doing?" I ask, moving to help Peggy up. She gives the slightest smile as she takes my hand. We stay there for a moment, staring at each other, before I grab Peggy's wrist. She flinches; I wonder why. "I need to talk to Peggy." I say harshly. I pull her into my room.
"Thank you..." She mumbles, hugging me. *She seems thinner than before, I can feel some of her rips and she feels like she weighs less.*
"Look, James told me you were...lying. Is...is that true?" I pull away, looking her up and down. *She looks weak, and I see a few more bruises that I never noticed before all over her body. She pulls her hair over the bruise on her eye,* noticing me looking.
"What? Of course not! I want to go to college! I want to marry someone I love! I don't want to marry your stupid, mean, horrible brother!" She shouts, throwing her hands up in the air.
"Peggy? Wh - why is he horrible?" She pulls away.
"He just...he just is, ok? I can't tell you." She looks sadly at the ground. I take her hands in mine and look her in the eye.
"Peggy, you can tell me anything."
Peggy's POV
I stare at him for a moment. Can I really tell him anything? Anything and...everything? *About how James won't let me eat? About how he hits me? About the names he calls me? * I sigh , looking away.
"No, I can't John, you don't know what he'll...say if he finds out." I mumble. He looks defeated, moving like he's going to leave.
"I can tell you everything, though...." He whispers, before turning around. I stare at hime for a moment. * Then, he kisses me. I'm surprised at first, the feel of his lips on mine. But then I relax. I remember how much I want to do this how much I'd rather be with him. He pulls away. * "I love you, Peggy, every since I first saw you...I love you." I stare at him.
"I - I love -" The door to his room opens before I can finish my sentence. James looks us up and down. Glaring at me, he pull me away.
"Getting a little close there sweety." He growls into my ear. I watch John's face fall as I'm dragged out of the room. I shudder as the door closes. What's going to happen, what horrible thing is he going to do to me now? * I wince as he raises his hand, but surprisingly, he pulls away. * He speaks slow and angrily.
"What were you doing with John?"
"N - nothing!" I reply quickly, moving to leave.
"Liar!" He shouts, grabbing me by the wrist. He stares at me for a moment before letting go. "I'm a nice guy, I'll show you that. But by being a nice guy, you better be a nice. Little. Girl. In return." He hisses. I nod shakily, before leaving quickly. What have I gotten myself into?
