Prom Night: Part 5
Lincoln Young
I left Lizzie and went right back to the bar. Sure I was already drunk, but I felt like I had to be even more drunk. It had alway hurt before that she never saw me as anything more than a friend, but this, this was heartbreak. I felt like we were finally getting somewhere, and she led me on, then she announced she's moving across the country next week. I've never thought of her as a bitch, but that was bitchy.
I took a second shot of vodka and leaned heavily against the counter. "Hey man, are you good?" Mason sat down at the stool next to mine.
I just shook my head. "Tonight sucks."
"Care to share?"
I sighed then told him everything that happened between Lizzie and I. "I just don't get it, she made it sound like she was in danger."
"I bet it was the Jackson's." Mason growled.
"What? Ethan's family?"
He nodded. "Something isn't right with them. Charlie's parents are seriously messed up."
"What do you mean?"
"Just look them up. They both did a lot of bad stuff in New York, if Lizzie's family is linked with theirs in any way I would be worried."
Dread built up in my stomach. "I don't know if their families are linked."
"Well you said Lizzie is going to their camp right?" he asked, I nodded. "Charlie told me their camp was a family thing, so if Lizzie is going there..."
"Oh god." I rubbed my temples. "What the hell is going on?"
Mason shook his head and slowly sipped from his bottle of beer. "They all have so many secrets and they won't even tell their best friends." He sighed.
"I feel like we aren't even best friends anymore." I realized. "Everyone has paired off and there have been too many falling outs."
"What falling outs?" He asked.
"Ethan and Amelia aren't talking anymore, you hate Andrew, you and Charlie weren't talking for a while. I don't think I can be around Lizzie anymore... I don't know man, maybe it's better this way." I spun my empty shot glass on the counter.
"You don't want to try and figure this out? I want to know why they're lying to us. Why are there things they say we can't know?" He spread his hands out. "I just want to fix things."
"Mason, we have the most boring week of school together left, then all four of them leave for New York and only two are coming back."
"What do you mean only two are coming back?" He turned and faced me, confusion plastered to his face.
"Andrew didn't tell you?" I asked, he shook his head. "He is moving back to New York with his mom. He and Lizzie aren't coming back."
Mason couldn't mask the pleasure on his face. "Long distance relationships never work,'' he muttered.
"No," I started, "you can't do this again." I realized where he was going with this.
"Lincoln, this is the best time. I can make her realize her relationship won't last and I'll be there." I could practically see the gears in his head turning, coming up with another elaborate plan to win Charlie over.
As if we had summoned her just by talking about her, Charlie walked up to the bar and leaned against the counter between us. "Hey guys." She smiled drunkenly.
Mason's face lit up and his whole demeanor changed. God that guy was such a fake, I really wondered why I was friends with him. He's inwardly a terrible person but masks it with lies and false charm.
"Looking for another drink?" He asked, gesturing to the bartender to pour another shot.
"Sure, why not?" She lifted the tiny glass to her lips and tilted her head back, downing the drink in one gulp.
"Why do you look so upset?" She studied me.
I plastered a fake smile to my face. "I'm fine, just had a lot to drink."
"I feel that." she smiled. She took Mason's beer from his hand and took a long sip. "That's disgusting." She grimaced, handing it back to him.
He shrugged, "I like it." He stood and put an arm over Charlie's shoulders. Oh no. I knew where he was going with this. Charlie is a blabbermouth when she's drunk. She's told countless secrets while heavily under the influence of alcohol. Sure, I was also very drunk, but I knew what Mason was planning.
He gave her another shot which she gladly took, before I could warn her not to drink anymore, Mason was already leading her away.
I stood up and looked into the crowd. I tried to spot Ethan or Andrew, just anyone that would get her away from Mason.
"Ethan!" I called, spotting his blonde curls near the railing. As I drew nearer I realized he was in a deep makeout session with Bella. Wow, that's awkward. I called his name again, pretending like I didn't know what they were doing.
He lifted his head up and caught my eye. "Hey, what's up?"
"Mason," I started, "he's getting Charlie really drunk, I think he's trying to get her to tell him things."
Ethan let go of Bella. "What kinds of things?"
"I don't know. Something about your camp? Your family?" I shrugged.
His eyes narrowed. "Gods, no." Bella muttered.
"Where did they go?" He asked.
I pointed to where I saw them walk last. They started to walk that way but I grabbed Ethan's arm to stop him.
"Ethan, you're my best friend, but you're keeping these secrets from me too. What could possibly be so important, so dangerous, and so secretive that you can't even tell me?"
His face softened and looked at me with pity. "I promise, one day I'll tell you. I just can't right now." Then he shrugged my hand off and disappeared into the crowd.
So that settles it. None of my friends trust me, and the only one that does is a self centered freak who is a genuinely terrible person. Great.
