Peter was still in shock from the letter. How was he to address this news to his mother and father? He hadn't even turned 18 yet - even though his birthday was coming up very soon. After a little time to think, Peter decided it would be best to tell his parents as soon as possible - just to get it out of the way. He grasped the letter in his hand as he walked, looking down at the writing on the envelope. It wasn't long until he reached the kitchen where his mother and father sat peacefully, clearly not expecting such news.
" Mother, father, I have some... war related....news. I'm going to war as a cavalry manager, on the 3rd of September. They want me in as soon as possible... "
His parents froze with shock, his father even spilling half of his tea as he stared, aghast, at his son. Peter handed the letter to his mother, who stared down at it in silence, opening the envelope and scanning the letter carefully.
" Dear, it's true.. Pete is going to war, look.. " Peter's mother gave the letter to his father, who read through and looked up at Peter.
" Our son.. at.. war? As a Cavalry Manager? I won't believe it, even if you paid me forty pounds "
The next day, Peter began researching horses' behaviour and needs. He thought it would be better to be prepared a little early rather than late. He did have 2 months to spare until the war began, after all.
He researched horses at the library until 7:30pm, when the library shut. Peter walked home, with a whole satchel full of books swung over his shoulder and his collie at his side, who had been waiting outside the library for him (Peter didn't know the dog had been doing this, of course - otherwise he would of returned home with the dog immediately) .
