alright. we need to talk about to the 'enemies to lovers' trope.
this trope is grossly misused, and i feel like i need to explain myself with this. people will call couples/ships enemies to lovers when they're really just toxic. for example – enemies to lovers IS NOT DRAMIONE HOLY SHIT !!! he literally calls her wizard slurs and you have the AUDACITY to still go "enemies to lovers" <33 dramione is disgusting i said what i said. if this couple is just arguing 24/7, especially after they get together, then they're not a good "enemies to lovers" couple. they just need to break up.
the most critical part of this trope is getting the "to" part right: the transition from enemies to lovers. there's a couple things you can have that'll help with this transition –
1. **sexual tension**
2. there needs to be a foundation of trust and some sort of connection to bring them together. you cannot make them polar opposite and expect it to work. they've got to share some common traits and moral that'll help them connect.
3. a "turning point" event: some sort of moment that'll cause a shift in how person a views person b or vice versa. some ways to do this include – a. saving person a's life or their loved one b. being forced to work together as a team (my personal favorite) c. getting to know each other and realizing their initial feud is ridiculous.
personally, i'm a huge fan of enemies to lovers when it's done right. there's been too many instances, however, where i just think that the couple was more toxic than anything. the couple would be built on a foundation of bullying or a severe disconnect in moral values. i don't usually write the trope myself, however, because i'm a huge fan of fluff and i've tried writing it (and it Has Not gone well)
