Your eyes groggily opened as the car drove over a particularly uneven part of the road. The entire car was quiet and dark. The only light was of the streetlights of the Miyagi prefecture.

The harsh orange stereo read the time while the radio was on its lowest volume.

2:13am

You had been in the car for nine hours. How much longer?

You yawned and sat up. Looking around you saw your brother completely passed out, sprawled around the backseats. Chuckling at his funny position, you turned back around and faced your very tired father.

"Hey sweetie." He said, putting a tired smile on his face.

"Hey dad" You reply quietly.

"We should be there in about an hour" He said as if he was reading your mind.

You just nodded your head in understanding before sinking back into your seat.

"So... are you going to join any clubs?" Your father asked softly.

"I think I might join their light music club." You say shrugging. Your father looked at you oddly before shrugging.

"I didn't think you would go for music y/n?" He muttered

"Yeah, I started playing bass two years ago. Don't you remember?" You quizzed, shocked that he didn't know this.

"It must have slipped my mind. You're so invested in volleyball that I completely forgot." He shrugged and leaned forward adjusting his position.

"Well I've given up volleyball, dad. I really like bass. I have a freedom with the music, ya know?" You say smiling. Your tone however was a soft melancholy.

Your father just turned to you and gave you a pitied look before saying,

"You used to love volleyball."

"Yeah, but I don't know. Let it go dad." You say picking your fallen headphones off the floor of the car.

"Alright. Sorry I keep asking." He said sadly before turning his attention back to the road.

"So when do you start work?" You ask him, feeling bad that you refused him.

"Next week! On the tenth. It's the same day that you start school too, isn't that neat!" He said excitedly.

"yeah..." You trailed off. The thought of going to a new school once the school year had already started was terrifying. Your body filled with anxiety just at the thought.

"It'll be great to settle down somewhere new. Hopefully we can make some family friends as well!" He said cheerfully. You could tell that he was just trying to make the best of the situation, but you wished that he could just wake up and smell the flowers.

"Yup" You rolled your eyes, scrolling through your numerous playlists. Your father seemed to notice your annoyed but nervous arua, eager to step in and connect with you.

"How bout we make a deal."

"a deal?" You question, annoyed.

"If you can make a best friend by the summer break, I will pay for half of that new guitar you've been wanting."

"How did you know about the guitar?" You say shocked. You were hoping to save enough for a brand new bass guitar that you saw in a magazine, but the cost was ridiculos.

"Honestly I thought that you were just starting to take up guitar, but I guess you do need a new one, which is why I brought it up. I saw you fawning over that rock magazine so I took a look at the page you kept staring at. That's one pretty guitar, but it's got quite a hefty price."

Your face darkened a little, as you stared at your father incredulously.

"If you can make a good friend, then I will pay for half, but let's up the deal shall we..."

You quickly filled with excitement, your mind racing at the thought of a new guitar.

One friend seems easy enough

"If you can find and make friends with your soulmate I will pay for the entire guitar." He finished.

Your heart dropped. You sunk back into your seat and groaned. Your father just chuckled, knowing that it didn't matter if you didn't want them, they would end up being your best friend, regardless of differences.

"But dad, what if I don't meet them until university or when I'm old!" You argued, angry at your father for even thinking about bribing you.

"Then I'm only paying for half." He shrugged.

"That's not fair." You groaned

"Life's not fair." He shrugged.

You rolled your eyes at his comment before throwing your headphones on and turning up the volume.

The sweet silence didn't last long though, as the car rolled into a small neighborhood, before halting outside a medium sized house.

"We're here!" Your father sang as he turned the car off with a click.
