"You've always loved the strange birds
Now I want to fly into your world
I want to be heard
My wounded wing's still beating
You've always loved the stranger inside"

summary

Neave Villena had been born in east Ravka. Of course, if she told anyone that then they would question not just how she knew, but as to why she was in Kerch in the first place. To get to Kerch from where Neave was born, one would have to travel through the Fold, and that wasn't possible unless you had the money, knew someone dodgy, or were simply just lucky. It wasn't an ideal place to travel, either, but Neave supposed if you were desperate, then you simply just had to.

That was the thing: Neave had to.

On her deathbed, Marian Villena had shared Neave's story with her for the first time. Marian had been paid by Neave's biological mother to cross the Fold when she had been born so that her child could have a better life. All Neave had was her birth mother's whereabouts: the Second Army, most likely at the Little Palace, and Neave knew she simply had to find her. But Neave had also promised Marian that she wouldn't go chasing the past nor risk exposing herself.

After the funeral, Neave had packed up what little belongings she had and headed to Ketterdam in the hope of employment. From there, once she had enough money, she would pay to enter east Ravka and find her family.

The Crow Club — a place deep within Ketterdam's pleasure district was the heart of all things crooked. It was owned by the Dregs and run by Kaz Brekker, who had given Neave the barmaid job. But it came on one condition: Neave had to prove that she could handle herself. At that, Neave had smiled, knowing everyone simply saw a sweet girl but forgot that even roses have thorns. Neave wasn't foolish, though, and simply promised that if the time came, then she would show him. Apparently, she had said the right thing as Neave got the job.

Neave shouldn't enjoy working at the Crow Club, but she did since each day was different. However, by chance one night, Neave happened to overhear the crows talking about finding a way to get through the Fold. It was rare to surprise Kaz Brekker, but Neave had done it that night when she had emptied her pockets on his desk, declaring that she would be joining them.

Though, Neave never expected she'd end up helping kidnap a Sun Summoner, but whatever gets her to her family, right?

disclaimer

I don't own anything to do with the grishaverse! I simply own Naeve and her story!

trigger warning

This story may contain scenes of death, violence, strong language, grief, and mild sexual references.

Currently editing ready for season 2! I'm tempted to bring back the spin-off book of Neave in Six of Crows too at some point but I have too many stories right now!
